The neighborhood itself

La Jolla is the reason people move to San Diego and the reason they can’t afford to. Seven miles of sandstone coves, sea lions with zero self-awareness, and a village that runs on gallery openings and fish sandwiches. Go on a weekday morning and it’s perfect; go Saturday at noon and you’ll spend the day parking.

Know before you go

Parking: brutal after 10am — use the Coast Blvd lots at 8, or park uphill and walk down

Transit: Bus 30 from Pacific Beach / UTC

Don’t miss: the Coast Walk Trail at low tide

EAT5 ranked
1
The Taco Stand
$

Tortillas made fresh, and you taste it in the first bite — warm, pliable, strong enough to hold a California burrito together without the usual mid-burrito surrender.

2
George’s at the Cove
the view-dinner answer · $$$

The Cove sits right below the terrace, which is why people book George's in the first place.

3
El Pescador Fish Market
counter-service fish sandwiches · $$

The case out front is the menu. El Pescador is a working fish market on Pearl Street with a kitchen behind it, so you look at what came in this morning, ask whi…

4
Bird Rock Coffee
$

Washed and natural single origins, seven blends, decaf, and rare small lots, each one labelled with country, process, variety, and what it should taste like.

5
Wayfarer Bread
worth the morning line · $

A bakery that makes naturally fermented bread for a living has an enormous head start when it decides to make pizza, and Wayfarer's dough proves it: real struct…

1
La Jolla Cove sea lions
free coastal stop · keep a safe distance

La Jolla Cove packs an outrageous amount of coastal drama into a very small beach tucked between sandstone cliffs.

2
Windansea Beach
reef break · historic surf shack

The foreground here will not sit still. Reef and sandstone break the water into something different every few seconds, and the palm shelter on the sand has been the picture of this beach for decades.

3
Coast Walk Trail
the mile that sells the city

This is the one you walk. The path starts beside the Cave Store and runs along the top of the sandstone, and the angle changes every minute or two — down into t…

4
Sunny Jim Sea Cave
a cave with a gift-shop entrance

You pay at the door of a shop on Coast Blvd, then walk down a tunnel somebody cut through the cliff by hand.

5
Torrey Pines Reserve
10 min north · go early

Guy Fleming is the loop to do here. It is short, it is well maintained, and it opens onto two overlooks where the bluff drops into open ocean and a canyon runs inland behind you.
