The 10 Best Beaches in San Diego County, Ranked

Moonlight arrives with the whole kit already in place: a free lot at the top of the ramp, a playground, restrooms and showers, a concession, and volleyball courts. The sand is clean, the walk down is short, and downtown Encinitas sits a climb up the hill for when the group has had enough sun. Lifeguards work it through the year. Nothing about the day has to be solved in advance, which is why the same families turn up week after week.

Coronado hands you the widest sheet of sand in the county and about a mile of it to walk. The Hotel del stands over the south end, the sand glitters when the light drops, and a large group can spread out without touching anyone else's towel. Low tide opens a long flat walking line the entire length of it. The main tower is staffed year-round. This is the one beach where the postcard and the actual afternoon turn out to be the same place.

Fletcher Cove is a whole park sitting on top of a small beach. Up on the bluff there is lawn, a playground, clean restrooms and showers, and an overlook that does most of the work once the light goes orange. Down the ramp there is a compact stretch of sand with lifeguards on it year-round. When the tide is out the beach opens up, and the Cedros district and Highway 101 are close enough to stretch the stop into a whole afternoon.

Powerhouse settles the argument where half the group wants the ocean and the other half wants grass. The lawn runs right up to the sand, the playground is built to be climbed on, and restrooms and a shower sit a few steps from both. Below it, Del Mar's main beach is broad enough for a real afternoon in the water. When the sun drops, the village is a short walk up the street and back down again, which is why nobody here ever moves the car twice.

Windansea is sandstone shelves, water that goes genuinely clear on the right day, and the palm-roofed surf shack standing above the break. There is no boardwalk and no concession stand — the street ends, the houses stop, and the beach begins. Surfers work the peak; everybody else picks a flat rock and settles in. Come at golden hour with dinner already in hand and take the sandstone rather than the sand.

Torrey Pines turns one beach into an entire coastal morning. Reserve trails climb straight off the sand, the lagoon sits at the north end, and the bluffs run gold and vertical the whole length of the waterline. At low tide the beach opens wide and you can walk a long way with nothing built on either side of you. Do the trails first, then come down for the water.

Tamarack is the North County beach you can actually do twice in one week. Park, cross, and you are on sand with showers and restrooms behind you and the seawall running north for as far as you feel like walking it. Surfers are out most mornings. Carlsbad village is close enough to finish the afternoon with food. None of it is a production, and that is exactly why it gets used.

Black's is two miles of sand under 300-foot cliffs with almost nothing built on it. Scale is what you came for. A few minutes in, the city is gone and it is the bluff wall, the water, and whoever else made the effort to get down. Parts of the beach are clothing-optional. Lifeguards cover it, but there is nothing to buy and nowhere to shelter, so carry in what the day needs and carry it back out.

Ocean Beach is the stretch of coast that still behaves like a town instead of a destination. Newport Avenue runs straight down to the sand, so the afternoon does not end when you leave the water — it just moves up the street. Lifeguards are permanent on the main beach and the seawall gives you somewhere to sit when the wind comes up. Leave the car where it is and spend the second half of the day on foot.
