Free roadside spaces, a free two-hour lot, free all-day room east of the village and the tracks, or a beachfront lot you pay for and barely walk from. It is the largest beach in Oceanside and the setup matches — three lifeguard towers, restrooms, showers, a snack bar, volleyball and a playground, with the harbor right there. Lifeguards work this sand year-round, so an off-season Saturday is still a real day out. Bring the whole group. There is room.

Moonlight is the flattest arrival on the North County coast. The free lot sits at the top of a short level path down to the sand, ADA spaces run along B Street, and the Marine Safety Center hands out beach wheelchairs, free and first-come. Down on the sand it is clean and wide, with volleyball, restrooms, showers, a concession and a playground, and downtown Encinitas close enough to walk into for lunch. Stay for the sunset. That is the part people drive back for.

The concrete boardwalk ends inside the parking lot, which decides the entire arrival — you step out of the car onto pavement instead of dragging a cooler across soft sand. The lot is free and big, restrooms and showers are right there, the lifeguard station is permanent, and the sand runs wide all the way down to the jetty. The volleyball here is serious; pickup games go most of the day and the courts stay busy. This is the quiet end of Mission Beach, and that is most of the appeal.

Everything at Glorietta Bay sits within a few steps of the car — parking, grass, shade, a playground, bathrooms, picnic space, and a small sheltered beach on the bay. A family can hold a whole day inside one small radius. There is an ADA route in, so nobody gets stranded on the way, and the water on this side of Coronado stays still enough that toddlers actually play in it rather than get held above it. Bring a blanket and let the afternoon go long.

The biggest free oceanfront lot in the city sits directly east of the boardwalk, with flat ground the whole way between the two. On a warm weekend it goes early, so the trick is to be early with it. Once you are in, the day builds itself — permanent lifeguards, restrooms, showers, grass, a playground, kayaks going off the sand all morning, and a broad gentle stretch of water that beginners can stay in for hours. A seasonal mat runs out onto the sand and beach wheelchairs are available. This is the full beach day, and you only have to arrive once.

Paying here buys you a plan. South Beach is the main entrance, with sand straight off the lot; North Beach is where you go when South fills, and it is the one that takes oversized vehicles and has the beach-wheelchair ramp. Both run on kiosks and automated pay machines, and a light at the South entrance flashes when that lot is closed, which saves the pointless U-turn. What the money actually gets you is the walk under the bluffs, with the reserve climbing straight off the back of the sand.
