Evidence first. Rankings with a spine.
The San Diego List publishes research-driven editorial judgments. We define the reader’s decision, examine the real field, verify current facts, and then take a position.
START WIDER
We research a substantially larger candidate pool than the final list and document serious inclusions and exclusions before the ranking is written.
VERIFY THE EXACT PLACE
Branches are separate identities. Every included place must resolve to its exact name, address, coordinates, and current open status.
READ BOTH SIDES
Recent positive and negative customer patterns inform consistency and logistics. A single complaint or viral post never controls a ranking.
DIRECT OBSERVATION ONLY
We attempt the exact Google and Yelp listing for every included place. At least one directly observed rating and review-count pair is required; inaccessible or missing platforms are recorded as such, never estimated from snippets or copied from another branch.
SOURCES HAVE RANKS TOO
Official websites, menus, schedules, ticket pages, reservation systems, and government sources control operational facts. Reputable reporting supplies news and historical context. Reddit, directories, and other lists can expand discovery, but they do not verify a claim.
ATTRIBUTED, ALWAYS
Google and Yelp figures remain attributed third-party information. They are visible to help readers assess the evidence and are never represented as ratings collected by The San Diego List.
The score follows the question.
Dish lists, occasion restaurants, deals, activities, and itineraries use different locked rubrics because readers are making different decisions.
- 01Review counts never add points and popularity never substitutes for execution.
- 02Chains receive no popularity advantage; a multi-location brand may appear but cannot rank first.
- 03Scores and deterministic tie-breaks establish order before the article is written.
- 04A separate ranking audit challenges omissions, evidence quality, score math, and the final order.
- 05Rankings change when stronger or newer evidence changes the case.
- 06Candidate dossiers, criterion scores, and internal quality grades remain private.
Current evidence has an expiration date.
Safety, closures, hours, deals, prices, events, and open status are rechecked more often than stable history. An article’s modified and verification dates advance only after a meaningful review.
A higher rank cannot be purchased.
We love being invited to try new places — openings, tastings, and launches are welcome. When a visit is hosted or a piece is sponsored, it is always clearly labeled near the affected recommendation, and no invitation, sponsorship, or affiliate relationship ever moves a ranking.
