The neighborhood itself
22 verified places · 10 eat & drink and 13 things-to-do listsCarmel Valley and Del Mar Heights sit on the mesa between the 5 and the 56, and most of the eating happens at one intersection. One Paseo and Del Mar Highlands face each other across El Camino Real at Del Mar Heights Road, with thirteen counters and a central stage on the Sky Deck above the shops. Park once and walk both sides.
West of the freeway the mesa runs out at the ocean. Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve holds its gates from 7:15 in the morning until sunset, the state beach entrance sits at the bottom of the grade on North Torrey Pines Road, and paragliders go off the cliff at the Gliderport from 9 until sunset whenever the wind allows. The Extension, north of the lagoon off Del Mar Scenic Parkway, is the quiet end of the same reserve.
Inland, off the 56 at Carmel Country Road, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar spreads across 400 acres against Los Peñasquitos Canyon: a private Tom Fazio course, an equestrian center, four pools, more than 37 miles of trail. The spa sells a day pass to anyone 18 or older.
Do it in that order on a warm evening. Trail while the gates are still open, then dinner on El Camino Real.

Parking: at Del Mar Highlands use the multi-level structure behind Urban Plates, where the four EV chargers sit on level 1, or the surface spots next to Sky Deck
Beach lots: Torrey Pines runs demand pricing — $15–$20 south, $10–$25 north — and a flashing light means the South Beach lot is full
Cliffs: stay at least 10 feet off the bluff bottoms and go at low tide; collapses were documented in April 2025 and February 2026
Dogs: none anywhere inside the Torrey Pines reserve or beach boundaries, not even inside a parked car
Gates: reserve and beach gates open at 7:15 AM and close at sunset; the entrance kiosk shuts about half an hour earlier
