Of the 40 San Diego spas we looked at, none carried higher ratings with that many reviews behind them.

The 60-minute organic Hydrokiwi facial is the other signature. Kiwi describes it as a "soothing, moisturizing, non-invasive" treatment done in a traditional European cleansing style, so it's an easy first booking if you've never had a facial and want something gentle.

Kiwi also puts some thought into the time before your appointment. Treatment guests get to settle into a VIP lounge with zero-gravity massage chairs before the service starts, and parking is free, which by Pacific Beach standards is its own small luxury. Forest House SPA in Miramar is for anyone who wants an hour of quiet and no sales pitch. The spa publishes a quiet policy and says it doesn't sell products during a session, so the time you booked stays yours from start to finish. That calm, low-fuss appointment, backed by ratings among the highest on this list, is what lands it at number two.

Book the head spa treatment. It's the signature here, and it shares the menu with deep tissue massage and facials, so you can build a longer visit or come back for something different next time. The oils are cold-pressed jojoba and sweet almond bases, a detail worth knowing if you're particular about what goes on your skin.

The setting is practical: a suite in a business park on Miramar Road, with private parking right there. There's no sauna, steam room or pool, so the treatment is the whole visit. That simplicity is also where Forest House pulls ahead of Four Moons, the next spot down. Four Moons is the destination day. Forest House is the one that's easy to park at, easy to plan and easy to fit into a busy week.

North County folks have another option, since Forest House runs a second location in Escondido. The private parking applies to the Miramar spa, so double-check which one you're booking.

Four Moons Spa in Encinitas makes its case with the setting. The spa describes its home as "private, sun-drenched grounds just a mile from the ocean," with an entrance it calls a "pyramid portal" and a natural, globally inspired design throughout. Even the mission statement sets the mood: "To raise the frequency of the planet by starting within."

The awards back up the atmosphere. San Diego Magazine named Four Moons Best Day Spa for both 2025 and 2026, Best Massage for 2026 and Best Facial for 2025, and it has been featured in Goop, Sunset and Forbes. On this list, it edges out the Fairmont Grand Del Mar on the one thing a resort can't copy: these grounds.

The move is a massage paired with the soak-and-sauna ritual, so you get the setting and the hands-on work in one booking. The menu reaches further, too, with acupuncture and sound healing. If you've been meaning to try sound healing, this is the spot on the list for it. Four Moons is appointment only, so book ahead and arrive with a little time to spare.

Two planning notes. Add-ons come out of your booked hour instead of extending it, so if you want extras, book a longer session. And the rail line runs right past the property, so a few recent reviewers mentioned a train rolling by mid-treatment. Consider it part of the Encinitas soundtrack.

The Fairmont ranks just above Yu Spa on the experience itself. Yu has the more unusual lineup of rooms, and the Fairmont scores higher on the visit as a whole. One rule to know before you invite anyone: everyone on the spa floor has to be 18 or older, so this is a grown-ups' day.

Yu Spa on Convoy Street in Kearny Mesa is the only full jjimjilbang in the county. Jjimjilbang is the Korean name for a communal bathhouse built around heat rooms, and Yu's lineup is a long one: red clay and Himalayan salt sauna rooms, herb-scented sauna rooms, dry and steam saunas, an ice room, hot and cold tubs, showers, and a common rest area where everyone wears the house uniform.

You can go on admission alone, $45 for the sauna floor or $55 with the jjimjilbang. The smarter booking is the body scrub and massage combo, because a scrub or massage folds admission into the service price. The scrub is done with exfoliating mittens that, in Yu's words, "slough away dead skin cells," and the massage menu covers Shiatsu, Swedish and Deep Tissue at 60 minutes each.

Yu is the most-reviewed spa of the 40 we looked at, and nothing else on this list offers anything like it, which is how it lands ahead of Whispering Day Spa. Recent reviews also carry a few first-timer tips. Moving through the rooms can feel confusing the first time, so ask at the front desk how to sequence them, then give yourself time to alternate heat, cold and rest. Food comes from a snack bar, so plan a proper meal before or after.

A few rules to know: Yu is closed Tuesdays, it stays open until 9 on Fridays and Saturdays, and children under 13 aren't admitted.

Whispering Day Spa is a second-floor massage studio on Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest, and it might be the easiest spa on this list to plan. It posts its prices more clearly than any other spa we looked at, so you know the total before you book, and that clarity is a big reason it edges out Hot Haven for the sixth spot.

The menu keeps the choice simple. There's a 50-minute Swedish, an 80-minute deep tissue for when your shoulders have opinions, and an 80-minute couples deep tissue if you're bringing someone along. Skin care and body treatments round things out, and group and celebration packages make it a handy pick when a few friends want to book together. Ratings are strong across the board.

There's no sauna, steam room or pool, so the massage is the whole visit. Parking is the one thing to sort out ahead of time. Metered street spots nearby are limited, and the spa points guests to free parking at Balboa Drive and Sixth Avenue, about a two-minute walk away. Build those extra few minutes into your plan, and you'll arrive relaxed instead of circling the block.

Hot Haven in Bankers Hill is the place for heat without a bathhouse. This Grape Street studio runs two kinds of infrared: a cocoon-style infrared wrap and a Sunlighten mPulse cabin that works on three wavelengths, and both happen in private rooms. Nothing else on this list works quite like it, and that originality puts it a step ahead of Zen Sanctuary.

The order is the Haven Ritual. It starts with lymphatic compression and follows with the infrared wrap, all in a 55-minute session. Your first session is $50, and a single session after that is $59. If it turns into a habit, packages start at $36 a session and memberships at $49 a month.

Think of it as a focused hour. There's no cold plunge or wet area, so it slots neatly into a busy day and leaves the rest of your afternoon free. It has the smallest following on this list, and those reviewers give it close to perfect marks.

Zen Sanctuary is a small spa on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights, run by two owners who are both certified massage therapists and holistic health practitioners. That's a lot of training under one modest roof, and the menu matches that range, with massage alongside acupuncture and skin care. The space itself has bamboo floors and shows work by local artists.

Book the deep tissue massage after work. With acupuncture and skin care on the same menu, you can build a visit around whatever needs attention, or come back for something different next time. The spa's listed closing time is 9 PM, which makes it a natural after-work booking, but confirm the late slot when you reserve.

Because it's small, the calendar fills up before the room does, so plan ahead. Prices aren't posted, so ask for the rate when you book. Ratings are consistently strong, and it's the quality of the treatment itself that earns Zen Sanctuary its spot ahead of Spa & Salon at The Del.

Book a morning ritual and save the terrace and pool for afterward. The amenity floor is compact, so plan this as a treatment-first visit with the view as the finale. Its reviews are also the most recent of any resort spa we looked at, and several of them mention the therapist by name.
