You can spend a good hour here without booking anything. The Ice House Museum is free and open daily, full of artifacts and memorabilia from the resort's past, plus a Marilyn Monroe selfie spot that is the hotel's own nod to Some Like It Hot. Outside, the public beachfront path gives you the cleanest look at the 1888 Victorian without walking through anybody's lobby. Photograph it from the sand, where the whole silhouette fits into one frame.

The boat puts you on the bay side of the island, which is the right door into Coronado. The crossing is over almost before you have settled into it, and what it hands you is the whole island opening inland — Orange Avenue, the beach, the Del at the far end of it. Bring a bicycle if you have one; it boards when there is room, and it turns the afternoon into one continuous thing. Go over early and let the boat do the driving.

Coronado is flat, small, and shaped like something you are meant to cross on a bicycle. Pick up the signed bayfront stretch of the Bayshore Bikeway at the Ferry Landing, run it down past Glorietta Bay, come out at the Hotel del and Central Beach, then climb back up Orange Avenue. The longer Silver Strand run toward Imperial Beach is a different day and a different set of legs. Keep it inside town and you get both of Coronado's shorelines in one ride.

The designated run at the north end is where the island's dogs actually go, and there is enough open sand that a fast one can stretch out without landing in somebody else's game. It sits past everything else on the beach, up at the North Island edge, so the dogs get a stretch entirely their own and the sunsets come free with it. Early is the good version. Cooler sand, fewer bodies, and the first dogs down there have the place to themselves.

Sunday evenings from late May into September, a free concert plays from the gazebo bandstand at Spreckels Park, now in its 56th season. The lineup is what a small city books for itself — swing and blues bands, tribute acts, the Navy Band Southwest brass band. Families spread out across the lawn, there are free dance lessons, and nobody is selling you a ticket. Most shows start at 6 and a few move earlier, so go by the band's own time and get there while the grass is still open.

A resident professional company works out of the Spreckels Building on Orange Avenue, running full productions all year in a room small enough that sightlines stay close from every seat. That closeness is the whole appeal, and it changes what a musical feels like. The productions are properly cast and the front of house is genuinely welcoming. Walk to dinner afterward, because everything on this street sits minutes from the door.
