Cuyamaca Rancho State Park
Cuyamaca Rancho State Park is where the San Diego backcountry stops feeling like a side trip and becomes its own world. California State Parks lists more than 100 miles of riding and hiking trails, Cuyamaca Peak at 6,512 feet, and Stonewall Peak at 5,700 feet on a 2-mile trail. Lower down, Green Valley Falls brings cascades and shallow pools, while Paso Picacho and Green Valley offer a combined 166 campsites at different elevations, plus five cabins at Paso Picacho. Day use is $10 per vehicle and camping is $40 per night. Choose one elevation and one main objective instead of trying to swallow the whole park. A summit, a waterfall stop, or a night under the mountain sky can each carry the day beautifully on its own.
