The view from the top is the payoff — go up while the air is still cool and the trail is yours.

The 3.3-mile loop is the point. It runs under mature shade for most of its length, which matters more here than it sounds like it should, and it stays flat enough that nobody in the group has to be talked into walking it. Ball fields, open lawns, play space, and reservable picnic areas fill in around the edges. Free, unfussy, and the rare park that works on a Tuesday as well as it does on a Saturday.

The original counter at 4246 is small enough that the line stands right up against the people eating, and that turns out to be the best thing about it. Volunteers work the floor and will talk for as long as you let them. That is the real pull of a museum this size: nothing standing between you and the material, and someone right there who knows it.

Baja and the Mediterranean on one menu sounds like a stretch until the short-rib tacos land. Martha's spaghetti is the other dish people come back for, and between them you have most of what this kitchen is trying to say. It is the kind of room where dinner stretches into a whole evening, which is exactly what it was built for. It has been on Bonita Road for years, and it is still the closest thing the town has to a proper night out.
