Annie's Canyon Trail is the best thing to do in Solana Beach. It is a
sandstone slot canyon at the edge of the San Elijo lagoon, it costs nothing,
and the whole thing is short enough that kids finish it. Nothing else on this
stretch of coast looks remotely like it.
The rest of the town lines up along one street. The train comes in at the top
of Cedros, the design shops start below it, Belly Up sits in the middle, and
the farmers market fills in the south end on Sundays. Fletcher Cove is west of
all of it, with the lawn and the sunset.
Two of the seven sit outside that walk and both want a little planning — the
canyon before the crowd arrives, the north-end reef when the tide is out.
Do the canyon first thing and let Cedros have the afternoon. If anyone is
getting in the water, open the County live water-quality
map first. For the wider coastal decision, start

in the countywide best hikes ranking,
Belly Up anchors the best live music venues in San
Diego, and the best San Diego
date ideas picks it up if this is a
two-person day.
