The launch is the part nobody warns you about. You go out through the shore break off La Jolla Shores, and the whole group arrives on the other side of it laughing. You pay at the door of a shop on Coast Blvd, then walk down a tunnel somebody cut through the cliff by hand. 145 stairs later you are standing inside a sea cave, on a platform, with the ocean working away at the opening in front of you. It is short, it is $13 for an adult, and it is unlike anything else on this coastline — a piece of La Jolla history you reach through a shop door. Wear shoes with grip and take the stairs at your own pace, both directions.

La Jolla Music Society built this hall on Fay Ave to sound right, and it does. The room is small enough that a single instrument reaches the back without effort and you can watch a player's hands from most seats. Pick the artist first, because the calendar is the whole proposition here. Then use the address: the Village is right outside, so dinner before and a walk after are both on foot. Book the seat and let the programming decide the rest of your night.

The Village has commissioned contemporary art onto the sides of its own buildings, so a loop around Wall St and the blocks near it turns into a small free exhibition.
