Ocean Front Walk is the free one, and it is what most people actually come here to do. Head south from Belmont and it calms down block by block, the ocean staying on your right the whole way, until the jetty at the Mission Bay channel gives you a clean place to turn around. Head across Mission Boulevard and the water goes flat. Go in the morning: the water is glassy, the equipment range is at its widest, and the afternoon breeze has not turned up yet.

The perimeter road runs one way for roughly 5.2 flat miles, so it doubles as a run or a ride with open bay on one side and the skyline sitting across the water. There is a fenced area near the entrance if you want something contained, but the open shoreline is the distinctive part. Nothing out here is developed. Go early, while the pavement is still cool and the light is low.

The playground is the draw, and it is a serious one: half an acre of it, with a rope structure at the middle big enough that a child picks a route up and commits to it. Around that sit grass, picnic space, restrooms, accessible paths, a shade structure, and a designated swim area in water that stays calm. Fire rings are first-come, which is how an afternoon here turns into an evening. Get there early enough on a weekend to claim the shade and a ring, and the rest of the day runs itself.

The pool opened in 1925 beside the coaster and has been restored into something no municipal pool has any right to be: a big indoor-outdoor room with a roof that opens when the weather cooperates, lap lanes down one side, and fitness equipment along the deck. South Mission is where the sand goes wide and the midway noise finally drops away. The volleyball here is the real thing, pickup games among people who play every week, running most days the wind allows. Bring a ball and be ready to ask to join, because there is no booking system and no promise that a net is free. Showers, restrooms, and parking sit right behind the courts, and the channel jetty at the end is the obvious cool-down walk. Play until somebody better turns up, then go stand in the water.
