Real surf, wide wet sand, and no leash required at any hour of the day or night. Dogs go in, come out, shake on somebody, and go back in. It is busy, loudly so on a weekend morning, which is a poor time to discover that your recall is theoretical. The river outlet is the thing to watch — water quality there swings with the weather, and after rain it is a hard no. Come back for the sunset walk, which is the quieter, better half of this beach.

Coronado gives you room. The sand is wide and bright, and there is enough of it that two dogs who would rather not meet never have to. The legal off-leash run sits at the north end, so the walk from the car happens on a leash and takes longer than it looks — that approach is the price of admission here. Once you are inside the zone it opens all the way up, into flat sand, open water, dogs sorting themselves out, and a sunset people plan their evening around.

Del Mar runs on a calendar. From the day after Labor Day until the middle of June, a dog under voice control can be off leash all day in the North Beach zone, and that is when this beach is at its best — long open sand, the river mouth at one end, room enough that nobody is negotiating. In summer the window narrows to dawn until 8 AM, which sounds punitive until you are standing on that sand at 6 with the whole beach still unclaimed.

Maggie Houlihan is grass, not dirt, and split into three runs — big dogs, small dogs, and one for the first-timer who needs a soft opening before meeting the general population. It sits inside a community park, so the human half of the outing has somewhere to be too, and the whole place stays noticeably clean. Go in a dry stretch of weather, in the morning, while the grass is still cool and there is shade to stand in.

Santee sorts its dogs by size, and the puppy pen is the part that earns it — somewhere to take a dog that has not yet worked out what other dogs even are. The run sits inside Mast Park, so when it has done its job you clip the leash back on and keep walking instead of driving straight home. Heat is what decides your timing out here; the coast version of a hot day is not this one. Come at the edges of a summer day and the place does exactly what a dog park should.

Five acres of grass under old eucalyptus, right in South Park, with a regular crowd that knows every dog by name and the owners by dog. There is no fence anywhere on it. For a dog who comes when called, that is exactly the appeal — open ground, no gate, shade that actually reaches the grass. A dog who bolts should be somewhere with a latch on it, because the street is right there. Go in the last hour of light, when the eucalyptus goes long and half the neighborhood is out.

A leashed walk with an actual destination. From the Park Village end, the trail follows the creek out to the waterfall and turns around there, shaded for most of it, long enough that the dog sleeps through the afternoon afterward. It is the outing for a dog who would rather not meet a dozen other dogs today. Give it a run of dry days.

Fully fenced, dead center of Balboa Park, open whenever you need it — this is the one for a dog whose recall is a work in progress, or for 10 PM on a night when nobody got walked. It is dirt, and in a dry week it is dusty dirt, and it is rarely empty. What it has is a gate that closes behind you, water on site, and a set of regulars who turn up like it is a standing appointment.

Pure is the North County pint where the dog is part of the plan rather than a thing to apologize for. Leashed dogs are welcome, and there are water bowls and treats waiting for them. The outdoor space is where it lands — room enough that nobody is stepping over a tail, beer worth the drive up, and staff who are visibly pleased to see the dog. It does nothing at all for a dog's legs, so spend the morning somewhere with sand in it and let this be the sitting-down half of the day.

The lagoon does the work here. Viewpoint sits on the water in Del Mar with its outdoor tables pointed at it, and the brewery says outright that dogs are welcome. That makes it the obvious landing spot after a morning on the sand — leash on, table outside, everybody tired in the correct way. It is built for a group that wants to sit a while over beer and a real meal rather than eat and run. Aim at weekend brunch, when the water is bright and the dog has already had its run.

The central one. Gravity Heights sits in Mission Valley with an outdoor space big enough to absorb a group, two hours of parking, and a company that says out loud that pups are welcome out there — which is precisely what you want when everybody is driving in from a different corner of the county and one of them is bringing a dog. Order the beer, take a table on the outdoor side, and let the dog do the only thing it wants to do after a morning at the beach, which is sleep.
