The pilings are what make this one. Stand on the public sand and the pier turns a plain flat horizon into a composition — legs marching out into the water, the sun dropping between them, everything in silhouette. It is a long beach, so you can keep walking north until the frame is exactly what you want. Photographers know about the seasonal alignment and the tripods arrive early for it. Get there while there is still light to waste, and give yourself the length of the beach to work with.

When the marine layer settles on the coast, drive up. The summit sits above most of the gray, and from the top the ocean, Mission Bay, downtown, and the eastern mountains all change color at once instead of one at a time. The sun is further away up here, which trades heat for scale. The gate stays open late enough to wait the whole thing out, and the ocean side and the city side finish at completely different times.

A lawn, a row of benches, and open Pacific straight ahead. Calumet is the Bird Rock answer for anyone who would rather not cross sand to watch the sun go down — park on the street, walk a few steps, and the horizon is already in front of you. It is small, which is the whole appeal on a weeknight and the whole problem on a Saturday. Take a bench about an hour out, and the rest of it happens without you moving.

The foreground here will not sit still. Reef and sandstone break the water into something different every few seconds, and the palm shelter on the sand has been the picture of this beach for decades. Light coming in low across wet rock is a different proposition from light on flat sand. Stand on dry ground, keep the shelter in the frame, and watch the surfers work until it is too dark to see them.

This is the widest, easiest sunset in the county. The sand runs out far enough that a whole group can spread across it without anyone landing in the frame, the horizon is unbroken all the way west, and the Hotel del stands behind you going warm at exactly the moment everybody is facing the other way. Turn around during golden hour; that is half the reason to be here. The walk in from the boulevard is flat the whole way, so strollers, wheelchairs, and grandparents all get to come.

Everything you forgot is already here. Moonlight has restrooms, showers, lifeguards, volleyball, food within walking distance, and free parking close enough that nobody has to circle for it — which means you can decide on the drive home to go and watch the sunset, and actually be there for it. The horizon is wide open and the sand is clean. It is a short walk to downtown Encinitas afterwards, so the evening does not have to end when the sun does.

Bring a blanket and stay put. The hill gives you Mission Bay, the ocean behind it, and downtown off to one side, all from a slope you can lie down on — the water is a long way off here, and the trade is that three different things go orange at the same time. It fills up with dogs and picnics and nobody in any hurry to leave. Stay well past the sun, and the city underneath starts to light up.
