10 Breweries Actually Worth the Hype

Murky, hop-forward IPA is the house signature, and the Miramar original is where the full range behind it shows up — specialty releases, one-offs, and whatever the brewers finished this week. The board turns over fast, so the list you drank last month is already gone. The room is the most deliberately designed taproom in the industrial park, which sounds like faint praise until you are sitting in it. Start with the newest hoppy release, then order the beer you cannot categorize.

Build a flight. That is the move here, where the awards are spread across styles and the point of the visit is drinking four different things instead of two of the same. The Convoy taproom is plain in a way that lets the beer do the talking, prices stay reasonable, and the staff will walk you across the board without making a ceremony of it. Come in early on a weekday, take the long way through the tap list, and see how far it goes.

The IPA is the reason to make the drive to Alpine, and it lands fresh enough to justify every mile of it. McIlhenney keeps the Alpine hop lineage going in a small room where the bar treats a first-timer like a regular and the board stays short on purpose. Doors close at 7, which makes this an afternoon rather than an evening. Get up there with the light still high, sit down, and let the beer be the whole reason you came.

Speedway Stout is the beer that made this address, and .394 is the one you stay for. The Miramar room is enormous — big enough for tours, events, and a table for however many people you brought — with the barrel program working away in the background. It is one of the few taprooms in the county that can absorb a large group without anybody having to shout. Order .394 first and Speedway last, because nothing follows that stout.

The University Avenue room is large and loud in the way a good brewery should be, and on Friday and Saturday it pours until midnight, which turns a taproom into an actual night out. Open on Hop-Fu, then work sideways into the lagers, which are what keep a table sitting there for another two hours. Something is usually on the events calendar and a crowd has usually turned up for it. Take the long table and let the evening run.

Treevana and Carlsbad Crush are the two beers to know here, both poured about as fresh as beer gets, from a Carlsbad business park that gives away nothing from the street. Ask which one came off the line most recently and drink that. Community events fill the room on nights when a business park has no business being full, and the hop program is why people keep turning up for them. Get there in the afternoon and take the long version.

The Pupil is the West Coast IPA this city keeps coming back to, and it is still the first thing to order here. Around it, Societe keeps a Belgian-leaning list and a cellar program most taprooms would not attempt, which makes the second and third pours the interesting part of an afternoon. The Kearny Mesa room is large and unfussy, the service is genuinely good, and nobody rushes you out of a seat. Order The Pupil, then ask what has been sitting in the cellar longest.

Green Cheek pours world-class hoppy beer close to the water in Oceanside, and it runs a real kitchen, so an afternoon here can turn into dinner without anybody moving the car. The patio is the seat to want, and the staff know what just landed on tap. The IPA is the reason to come and the coast is the excuse. Ask them what is newest, then stay until the light goes.

Pizza and house beer, made in the same building, at prices that never caught up with the rest of the county. The Carlsbad Village original brews on site and keeps a tap list deep enough that choosing a flight takes real thought, and the room absorbs families and beer people at the same time without picking a side. It is loud and it has never pretended otherwise. Order a pizza, drink the house beer, and take whatever table opens up.
