10 Breweries Actually Worth the Hype

Dave Ohmer's favorite beer style is pilsner, and that tells you a lot about Seek Beer Co. This small North Park taproom on El Cajon Boulevard tops the list because it brews almost everything well. At the 2025 San Diego Beer News Awards, Seek was named Champion Brewery, with first places spread across styles that have little in common: Fortune for pilsner, Frequency Illusion for hazy IPA, Endless Timeline for imperial IPA, Intermission Hop Water for alternative beverage, and Sentri Pass, a collaboration with Cervecería Insurgente. It also took Best Customer Service.

Seek belongs to Dave and his wife, Niki. He runs the brewing and operations, and she handles finance, marketing, HR and admin. Dave grew up in Cincinnati and brewed in Tennessee, at Saw Works and Woodruff, then in Houston, where he brewed at Whole Foods' first in-store brewery in 2014 and later ran Urban South's brewpub as head brewer and general manager. The name comes from a lesson the couple took from 2020: seek out the things you care about most. They opened in 2022 inside CRAFT by Brewery Igniter, a shared building for brewery startups, on a 10-barrel brewhouse inherited from Eppig Brewing.

The plan from the start was a steady stream of new releases in place of a fixed core lineup: lagers, a full range of IPAs, fruited sours and the occasional stout or porter. Dave's approach is to give each beer what it deserves, whether that's better ingredients, more care or more time. Lager is where the house pride shows. Taproom manager Tyler Hamman told San Diego Beer News in 2024, "we make the best lagers in San Diego County," and his favorite is Fortune, the German pilsner that serves as the flagship. The 2026 awards added six more, including first place in German beer for Fest Beer and second places for Fortune in pilsner and On a Monday in light lager.

The people pouring are a big part of the appeal. Seek won Best Customer Service in 2023, about a year after opening, and the praise still centers on the staff, the fresh beer, the events and the neighborhood feel. The taproom is small, with a large outdoor patio, it's dog- and family-friendly, and local food vendors and trucks come through every week. Seek also brews the Festbier for Bock's annual Bocktoberfest in South Park, a Wiesn-style lager made with German Pilsner and Vienna malts and a single-decoction mash, in a collaboration now in its second year. North Park Beer Co. is about half a mile away, which makes for an easy two-stop night.

If Seek is the neighborhood champion, Pure Project's Miramar taproom is the showpiece. This is where it all started: the original Pure Project taproom opened to the public on January 30, 2016, and it still houses part of the brewing, including the barrel-aging program. The team built the room by hand, with the famous moss wall, plants everywhere and soft lighting, and fans of the place mention the design right alongside the beer.

The story starts a long way south. Founders Jesse Pine and Mat Robar came up with the idea on a 2013 backpacking trip in Colorado, launched Manuel Antonio Brewing Company in Costa Rica, then moved to San Diego in 2015. The name carries the Costa Rica idea forward: pure, local ingredients, care for the environment and the Pura Vida spirit. Brewmaster Winslow Sawyer, who wrote his UC Santa Cruz thesis on sustainable brewing, joined in late 2015. Pure Project has given 1% of all sales, not profits, through 1% for the Planet since day one, and the house mantra is "Details Matter."

Miramar pours from 16 taps, and new beers often land here a day before they reach the other Pure taprooms. Fresh hoppy beer is the headline, and the specialty range is why Pure ranks this high. It was named the North Region's best brewery at the San Diego Beer News Awards in both 2025 and 2026, with wins for Mount Eden, the 2025 best sour, and Rain, a Bavarian pilsner with a floral flavor and a spicy finish that took first for pilsner in 2026. Enchiridion placed in barrel-aged and Diamond Dust in hazy IPA.

Food is easy here. Empanada Kitchen serves five kinds of empanadas on site, and you're welcome to bring something from the neighboring restaurants. Kids and dogs are welcome, and groups can book the Brewer's Suite for up to 25 people or a semi-private outdoor area for up to 30.

Hopnonymous Brewing Company pours one of the widest style ranges in San Diego from its Convoy taproom, and it started out as the brewery nobody knew they were drinking. Founder Remy Zurita, a native of Dunkirk, France, began as a specialty beer distributor and contract brewer, making food-friendly house beers for San Diego restaurants. The roster grew to 17 clients, including Crazee Burger, West Coast Tavern and Buona Forchetta, whose owners' request for house beers got the whole thing going. When a turnkey brewhouse came up, Zurita decided it was time to meet the customers and stop being incognito. Hence the name: hop plus anonymous.

Doors opened in 2018, and the Convoy Court flagship followed in 2019. Head brewer Hunter Mannix now runs a lineup that covers the map: Ripplin' Pils, a West Coast pilsner; Sun's Out Mum's Out, a Mexican amber lager; Life on Marz, a festbier; Vision Quest, a blonde; Sick Line, a West Coast IPA; and Oat Simulator, an English oatmeal stout. The awards spread out the same way. Hopnonymous won eight San Diego Beer News Awards in 2025, including firsts for The Dorsty Lion in Belgian ale and Stein O' Mite in German beer. In 2026 it won seven more, with firsts for customer service, for Juice Box Hero in alternative beverages, and for Leaving Without Saying Goodbye in U.K. and Irish ales, a name anyone who has pulled an Irish goodbye will appreciate.

That range is why this is the flight stop on the list. Where Pure Project leans into hops and specialty releases, Hopnonymous lets you line up a pilsner, an amber lager, a festbier and an oatmeal stout side by side. The praise tends to land on the flights, the friendly staff, good value and a relaxed, unfussy room. New beers drop every Friday, Tuesday is trivia night, and Monday is happy hour all day. A different food truck comes by each day, and seating and parking are on the modest side. Can't make it to Convoy? The second taproom on Adams Avenue in Normal Heights won Best Expansion Project in 2026.

McIlhenney Brewing sits on Alpine Boulevard in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, and the address has a lot of San Diego beer history in it. This is where Alpine Beer Company launched its brewery in 2002, and the family behind that beer is the family behind this one.

Pat McIlhenney was a firefighter who homebrewed and studied brewing science at UC Davis before he founded Alpine Beer Company in 1999. When the brewery opened on Alpine Boulevard, Skip Virgilio of AleSmith helped get it going. Alpine went on to win World Beer Cup and Great American Beer Festival awards, and RateBeer once ranked it the sixth-best brewery in the world. Shawn McIlhenney started there in 2006 filling growlers and worked his way up to head brewer.

In spring 2021, Shawn, Jamie, Pat and Val McIlhenney opened McIlhenney Brewing, three generations of the family, with Shawn as head brewer in the same spot where he'd brewed his batch of Bad Boy years earlier. Jamie brings more than a decade at Pizza Port in bartending, management and events. The taproom pours up to 25 house beers, including stouts, fruited beers, seasonals and barrel-aged beers, but the hop-forward West Coast IPAs are what it's known for. Muntz, an unfiltered IPA with Nelson Sauvin hops, has white-wine and gooseberry notes. McIlhenney was named Best Brewery in the East Region at the 2025 San Diego Beer News Awards, and in 2026 Shawn received the San Diego Vanguard Brewer Award.

The fresh IPA and the friendly small-room feel come up as often as the history. There's a tasting room and an outdoor patio, kids and pets are welcome, and you can take beer to go. It's an afternoon plan: closed Mondays, 7 PM close the rest of the week, limited seating and limited food options, so sort out a meal before or after. For West Coast IPA from this lineage, the drive from the city is well spent.

There's a beer in Miramar named for a batting average, and it's the best way into AleSmith Brewing. The .394 San Diego Pale Ale was created with Tony Gwynn and owners Peter and Vicky Zien, and the name is Gwynn's record single-season batting average. It debuted at the Padres Brewfest in 2014, and Gwynn died on June 16, 2014, ten days after the release. It's a golden pale ale with tropical fruit and citrus from the hops and a little caramel sweetness, proceeds support the Gwynn family's nonprofit for underprivileged San Diego youth, and there's an annual Tony Gwynn Day. It's one of the city's most popular beers, especially come baseball season, and a hazy version shows up as a seasonal.

The brewery goes back to 1995 and a modest Miramar space. In 2002, Grand Master beer judge and decorated homebrewer Peter Zien took ownership. Horny Devil, a Belgian golden ale, had already won a Great American Beer Festival silver in 1998, and in 2008 AleSmith was named GABF Small Brewing Company and Brewer of the Year. RateBeer called it the best brewery in the world in 2014. A year later it moved to a 109,942-square-foot home at 9990 AleSmith Court, off Miramar Road, with an 85-barrel system and a bigger tasting room. It also founded the Anvil of Hope charity for youth poverty when it turned 25 in 2020.

Save Speedway Stout for last. It's an imperial stout brewed with coffee, it comes in many variants, and in 2026 it won first place for coffee beer at the San Diego Beer News Awards, while the non-alcoholic Speedway placed third among NA beers. Nothing else on the board needs to follow it.

The tasting room is one of San Diego's largest, with a mezzanine, TVs, private event spaces, axe throwing and Swing at AleSmith golf. Kids and dogs are welcome and rotating food trucks handle dinner, which makes it the easiest stop on this list for a big mixed group.

North Park Beer Co. on University Avenue started with a homebrew recipe. Kelsey McNair came to San Diego to work in video games and had been homebrewing since 2004, and his Hop-Fu! IPA became, in the brewery's words, "the single most award-winning homebrew recipe in history" in the American IPA category. Kelsey and his wife Amanda, also a game developer, ran the company out of the garage at his North Park home while they spent years raising money, finding a location and building it out. The doors opened in June 2016.

That recipe is still the order, and it's still winning. It took Best West Coast IPA at the San Diego Beer News Awards in 2025 and again in 2026, the same two years North Park Beer Co. topped Best Brewery in the South Region, with Seek Beer Co. second both times. The 2026 haul included firsts for Art is Hard in hazy IPA, Barrel-Aged Macaroons Before Dying in barrel-aged, and Elder-Fu!, a collaboration with Russian River. In 2024, Seek's Dave Ohmer named it among his favorite local breweries.

This is the most complete city taproom on the list: a big room, a new kitchen, a dog-friendly patio, hoppy beer and strong lagers. A group can do dinner and a few rounds without moving. The kitchen closes at 9 PM Sunday through Thursday and 10 PM on Friday and Saturday, so order food early. On weekend nights the room is lively, street parking gets scarce and service can slow down, so a weeknight is the relaxed version. The same team also runs taprooms in Bankers Hill and a Pizza Shop in Crown Point.

The 2026 San Diego Beer News Awards named Burgeon Beer Company Champion Brewery, and the Carlsbad tasting room is where it all began. Three San Diego kids who grew up together started Burgeon in 2016, with a name that means to grow and flourish. Derek Van Leeuwen is a co-founder and Anthony Tallman is the co-founding head brewer. The brewery and flagship tasting room sit in the Palomar Airport Business Park, in the Bressi Ranch area. Burgeon has since added taprooms in Vista, Escondido and Little Italy.

Treevana is the beer to know. It's the flagship West Coast IPA, with big flavor, a bright citrus aroma and balanced bitterness, and many consider it San Diego's best always-available IPA. Follow it with Carlsbad Crush, a Mosaic pale ale that's light, bright, citrusy and very easy to drink. Both keep winning: Carlsbad Crush took first for hoppy non-IPA beer in 2025 and 2026, Treevana placed second in West Coast IPA both years, and Mixed Greens won imperial IPA in 2026.

Burgeon puts real work into the outdoors, too. In 2024 it became the first brewery triple-certified by Climate Neutral, 1% for the Planet and Ocean+Positive. It has planted more than 25,000 trees with the National Forest Foundation, supports kelp restoration with SeaTrees, and brews Reclaim the Sea and Reclaim the Wild IPAs to fund restoration work.

The Carlsbad room has 16 taps, rotating food trucks and treats behind the bar for visiting dogs. Burgeon won Best Customer Service in 2020 and 2023, and in January 2026 it threw a ninth-anniversary invitational beer festival.

Two alumni of The Bruery opened Societe Brewing in Kearny Mesa in May 2012. Travis Smith had also spent time at Russian River Brewing, and Doug Constantiner came straight from The Bruery. The name comes from the idea that beer is the world's greatest social uniter, and the beer list splits into four families: Old World lagers and Belgian-style ales, Out West hoppy IPAs, Stygian dark beers and Feral sours aged in wine barrels.

The Pupil is the first pour. Societe calls it "a tropical hop triumph," with guava and mango and a clean finish, and it has been a crowd favorite since day one. From there, move over to the Belgian side, where The Harlot placed at the San Diego Beer News Awards in both 2025 and 2026, or end with The Butcher, a huge imperial stout with deep roasted notes and a smooth finish that won Best Strong Beer in 2025. That same year Societe was named Best Brewery in the Central Region, with Hopnonymous right behind it, and it hosted the event.

The Kearny Mesa brewery runs as a beer garden and tasting room, with outdoor seating, a dog-friendly welcome and Fit Tacos cooking on site, though the food setup can change. Societe has a second taproom in Old Town, and the Kearny Mesa original is the big room: fans single out the service as well as the beer, and there's space to bring the whole group.

Green Cheek Beer Co. in Oceanside is the coastal stop where the beer and dinner come out of the same building. Two pals, Brian and Evan, founded Green Cheek in 2017 under the motto "Drink While Smiling," and built a name on hoppy beers, crispy lagers, big stouts and hard seltzers. The company has Orange County roots, and Oceanside is one of four locations, alongside Orange, Costa Mesa and Sunset Beach.

The Oceanside spot is a brewpub, with a tasting room and a kitchen that makes pizza dough in-house every day. Build your own pizza, or go for the German soft pretzel, wings, poke, smashburgers, fish tacos, chicken sandwiches, salads or the vegan burger. There are cocktails and NA options too, including Safety Jacket, a non-alcoholic West Coast IPA.

On the beer side, Green Cheek won a gold medal for imperial IPA at the 2024 World Beer Cup. The board runs from Good For Morale, a Czech-style pilsner, to All Outta Angst, a West Coast IPA, Doom Sludge, a West Coast black IPA, and Guava In Berlin, a Berliner weisse. At the 2026 San Diego Beer News Awards, Lavy Lemonade, a lavender lemonade hard seltzer, placed second in alternative beverages, and DDH The Other Brian shared second in imperial IPA with Pizza Port's Mongo.

The IPA, the food, the patio and the staff get the most love. It's under half a mile from the Oceanside Transit Center, where the COASTER stops, and less than a mile from the Oceanside Pier, so a car-free beer day works here.

Pizza Port Carlsbad Village solves the group problem where half the table wants beer and the other half wants pizza. Siblings Vince and Gina Marsaglia founded Pizza Port in Solana Beach in March 1987, buying a struggling pizza restaurant. Vince homebrewed in the storage area, and the first house beers poured in 1992. Carlsbad opened in 1997 as the second location and grew into the company's biggest producer.

A 15-barrel brewhouse on site feeds 40 taps, so the board runs deep: Swami's IPA, Chronic Ale (an amber), Ponto (a session IPA), Mongo (a double IPA), California Honey (a blonde), Coastin' (a tropical IPA), Amigo Lager and Bacon & Eggs, an imperial coffee porter. Bacon & Eggs won first place for coffee beer at the 2025 San Diego Beer News Awards, and in 2026 Mongo tied Green Cheek for second in imperial IPA. Pizza Port locations have won more than 91 GABF medals and awards combined.

The menu keeps pace with the taps: original pizzas, "Anti Wimpy Pizzas," build-your-own, munchies and salads, for dine-in or takeout. The house motto, tested every Friday night, is that good food and good beer bring good cheer, and there's been a bottle shop next door since 2008. Jamie McIlhenney of McIlhenney Brewing spent more than a decade at Pizza Port, one more link in the county's beer family tree.

The Carlsbad Village COASTER station is a couple of blocks away, and Burgeon is about five miles off if you want a second Carlsbad stop.
