The neighborhood itself

Miramar is San Diego’s workshop floor: a grid of production buildings off Miramar Road where the good stuff happens behind a roll-up door with a suite number on it. You drive here on purpose, park in a lot, and walk twenty feet.

Kenamar Drive and Distribution Avenue, out west, hold the big rooms — a still house pouring what it makes in the same building, a taproom its owners built by hand around a moss wall. The two-story tasting room is further east, on AleSmith Court off Miramar Road. Miralani, up north, runs smaller: a roaster pulling espresso at the front of the unit it roasts in, and neighbors doing wine, ginger beer and salsa behind ten-foot roll-up doors. Miramar Road runs the length of the district, angling northeast, and it is the errand strip. The grocery on it is the reason plenty of people drive across the county.

Start at 6:30 on a weekday with coffee on Miralani if you want a full day out of this. Come at noon and it is a taproom afternoon, which is the version most people do. Late September the base at the eastern end opens its gates and the sky fills up for a weekend.

Bring a trunk you do not mind filling.

Know before you go

Parking: free lots at every stop — the whole district is built around them

Driving: stops sit a few minutes apart by car; bring a designated driver for the taprooms

Addresses: look for unit and suite numbers on roll-up doors, not street frontage

Don’t miss: America’s Air Show opens the base for one weekend in late September; everyone 18 and over needs a government ID at the gate
