Pines close over the sites, the nights get cold in a way the coast never manages, and Stonewall Peak leaves from the day-use area next door. The rangers here keep the loops in good order and it shows. Squirrels and jays will go through anything left on a table, and a few sites catch road noise off the highway. Come up for the trail and stay for the temperature. Cuyamaca after dark is a different county than the one you left that afternoon.

You can read the surf from your tent here, on a bluff directly above the reef, and be down there before the coffee finishes. There is a camp store on the grounds, and Cardiff's restaurants are a walk rather than a drive, which changes what an evening here looks like entirely. Spacing is tight, upkeep varies loop to loop, and summer brings the crowds with it. Then the light goes gold over the water and everybody stops talking about any of that.

A meadow opens on one side of the campground and pines close in on the other, and the whole thing stays cool through a San Diego summer. Trails leave from the loops. Facilities are basic in the way national-forest camping is basic, vault toilets included, and the cold arrives faster than a summer packing list expects it to. Stay up late anyway. On a clear night the sky over Mount Laguna is the entire reason to make the drive.

Tent sites for the purists, cabins for everyone else, wildlife moving through the edges, and Julian close enough to build a morning around. County staff keep it clean and keep the rules the same from one weekend to the next. It is rustic rather than polished — coin showers, weekend noise. Nearly 11 miles of trail start at the campground, so the good part of the day begins before anyone has found the car keys.

Doane Valley is the closest thing this county has to real forest camping. Big trees, a meadow, a creek running through the middle of it, and sites tucked in tight enough that your neighbors stop existing. Wildlife moves through. The road up Palomar winds, cell service gives out somewhere on the way, the nights run cold, and there are never many sites to go around. All of which is why the place feels so much farther from the city than the mileage says it is.

Everything below camp here is desert basin. The trail leaves straight from the loops, palms stand in the canyon above them, and bighorn live on the slopes you spend the afternoon staring at. Then the sun goes down and the sky becomes the main event. Nothing on the coast gets a night like this one. Shade out here is close to theoretical and the wind has opinions. Come between October and spring, when the desert hands the whole thing over quietly and the stars run the rest of the evening.

Lake Jennings is camping you can do on a Tuesday. The sites look down on the water, hookups are there if you want them, the grounds are kept properly clean, and the staff are the reason a lot of people keep coming back. Summer bakes the upper loops, the ground is dry, and the water is strictly for looking at. Come out once the heat lets up and stay past dark — the sky over a lake this close to the city is a genuine surprise.
