South Carlsbad is the county's best total overnight: bluff sites face the Pacific, stairs reach the beach, and sunset happens at camp instead of after a drive. The large loop gives more chances than boutique coastal campgrounds, but good weekends still disappear when the reservation window opens. Sites near Carlsbad Boulevard catch road noise, privacy is limited, and the beach stairs are steep. Choose a mid-loop bluff site and accept that the view, not solitude, is the product.

Paso Picacho is the best inland all-rounder. Pines, direct Stonewall and Cuyamaca trail access, cooler nights, family facilities, and a strong mountain setting make the campground feel like a destination before the first hike.
