Start at La Jolla Cove, and start early. The public walkway between the Cove and
Children's Pool gives you most of the San Diego coast in one short stretch, and
it is the only stop on this day that gets worse by the hour.
After that the route runs south, then west, and never doubles back on itself: a
counter breakfast in Pacific Beach, two or three hours in Balboa Park, one
downtown parking spot that covers both lunch and the waterfront, and the Point
Loma bluffs at sunset. The finish is in Chula Vista, which tells you something
true about where the food in this county actually is.
Check what time the sun sets on your date before you plan a single thing, wear
shoes that can take a park, and treat every drive time as live.
Got three days? Use the expanded
itinerary. To build the day around one
big attraction instead, the master
ranking sorts them. The La Jolla
guide, the Balboa Park
guide, the fish-taco
ranking and the sunset
ranking each go deeper on a stop you
are only getting an hour of here.
