The neighborhood itself
50 verified places · 26 eat & drink and 15 things-to-do listsDowntown is three neighborhoods wearing one name: the Gaslamp's neon party blocks, East Village's ballpark-and-brewery grid, and a waterfront with an actual aircraft carrier parked on it. It's the most touristed square mile in the city — and still worth your time if you know which blocks to trust. Eat in East Village, drink on a rooftop, walk the Embarcadero at sunset, and let the hawkers out front of the Fifth Avenue combo joints do the ranking for you.
If you only do 5 things

Parking: garages run $10–40 and spike on game nights — all three trolley lines meet downtown; take one
Surge days: Padres home games and Comic-Con week (Jul 23–26) flood every block — check both calendars first
Gaslamp math: Fifth Ave combo-plate spots with hawkers out front charge double for less — walk one block east instead

The index
Ranked places pulled from all 41 listsYou order at the counter and the food shows up fast, which is the entire trick on a game night.
Mezze first, a spread built to be pulled at from every side of the table, and then dinner keeps arriving off the wood fire until somebody calls time.
Start the Gaslamp night with food that has a family story behind it.
Give the afternoon 4 full hours. Havana 1920's official happy-hour menu runs Monday–Friday from 2–6 PM, with $2 croquetas making it easy to send several different bites toward the middle of the table.
An aircraft carrier tied up on Harbor Drive turns out to be the best morning in Downtown.
A Padres game is the best night Downtown throws.
The lawns run wide and green directly across from the harbor, with a playground at one end and long reflecting pools down the middle.
One ticket gets you onto a whole fleet, and the Star of India is only where it starts.
