False Idol keeps its door hidden and its room dark, and the drinks coming out of it are built by people who can walk you through an entire shelf of rum without reaching for a note. The tiki thing is done properly — themed, theatrical, fully committed — which is why it still lands once you already know where the entrance is. Book ahead, ask for something on the drier side if syrup is not your register, and give the room an hour to work on you.

Start at the raw bar and let the oysters set the pace. Ironside shucks through lunch and dinner both, the lobster roll has a following of its own, and the redesigned room on India Street makes a Tuesday afternoon feel like an occasion someone planned. The cocktails hold their own next to the shellfish, which is rarer than it sounds. Build the table around cold water first and let one cooked plate ride along behind it. Of everything in the group, this is the easiest full meal to say yes to.

You get in through Neighborhood, and then you tell a bartender about yourself. Noble Experiment builds every drink to order — name a spirit you trust, a flavor you refuse, how far you want to be pushed, and something arrives that nobody else in the room is drinking. It is dim and small and scaled for two people, maybe three, which is the right size for a drink made specifically for you. Come for one, stay for a second if the first one lands, then go eat somewhere else.

The entrance rotates, and what is behind it has nothing to do with the mall around it. Raised by Wolves runs a bottle shop and a cocktail bar as two separate propositions, and the bartenders know the shelves well enough to talk you into a spirit you have never poured at home. Do it in that order — drink first, buy second, so the bottle you carry out is one you already like. It is a genuine destination in University City, and the room makes the trip up there feel deliberate.

Coffee in the morning and a negroni at the end of the night, in the same room, off the same counter. J & Tony's runs the longest useful day in the group: cured meats along one side, sandwiches and meatballs coming out of a small kitchen, and negronis built the way the drink deserves. That range is what makes it fit an actual plan — the meeting, the snack, the drink before the thing and the one after it. Order food even if you only walked in for the negroni.

Go for the sound. Part Time Lover is built around a hi-fi system and a vinyl program somebody clearly agonizes over, with a record shop attached so the discovery can come home with you. Highballs are the drink to get — clean, cold, no fuss, exactly right for a room where the music is the event rather than the background. Come early, while there is space to browse and a whole side can be heard end to end. The best hour here is the one before everybody else works that out.

Ask for a classic and say how you want it balanced — drier, brighter, boozier — and Polite Provisions hands it back exactly there. The bartenders are good enough to make that conversation worth having, and the art-deco room gives an ordinary Tuesday a setting it did not earn. It runs late every night of the week, which makes it one of the few cocktail rooms in the city you can decide on after dinner is already over. Early evening is when the bar seats are yours.

The soufflé pancakes are the whole reason, and the room they land in is theatrical and completely unembarrassed about it. Morning Glory treats breakfast as a production — savory plates that hold their own, caviar when the morning calls for it, drinks that make a weekday feel misrouted. Come with somebody who will split, because one sweet thing and one savory thing is the only sensible route through this menu. Bring out-of-town guests and they will assume you planned something.

Dry-aged steak, and a dining room that treats service as choreography. Born & Raised does its tableside work right in front of you, pours cocktails that take themselves seriously, and keeps a rooftop that can turn one dinner into two acts. Order for the table so everybody gets the show. This is the celebration restaurant of the group — the birthday, the closing, the dinner where somebody is being congratulated — and it commits to that job completely, from the first pour to the last.

Bread first. Leila sends out fresh bread and dips before anything else, and the koobideh that follows is the reason you booked. The Persian and Levantine cooking here has no equivalent anywhere else in the group, and the room was built to make a table of six feel like an event rather than a reservation. Order kebab platters sized for sharing and let people build their own plates. Save it for a birthday, an anniversary, or the dinner nobody is in a hurry to leave.

Dinner and a properly built cocktail in one booking, which is harder to arrange in Little Italy than it ought to be. Craft & Commerce keeps a kitchen worth ordering from and a bar that is nobody's afterthought, wrapped in a room designed to be looked at for a while. Take an early table, get one plate for the middle of it, drink something built rather than poured, and let the evening pick its own direction from there.

A burger and a good beer late at night downtown is a harder thing to arrange than it sounds, and Neighborhood arranges it every night of the week. The kitchen does burgers and short rib properly, the beer list is an actual list, and the room is casual enough to walk into straight from a game or a show without thinking about what you are wearing. This is the useful one — before, after, or instead. Get a burger, get a beer, take a table where you can still hear each other.

The room looks like a chapel and pours mezcal like it means it. Quixote cooks Oaxacan food inside the Lafayette and builds agave drinks that come out balanced rather than sweet, which is the entire test for a bar like this. Order a plate meant for the middle of the table, then a mezcal cocktail, and give the two of them time together. For a dinner that wants a little ceremony attached to it, this is exactly the right amount of theater.

Pick the show first. Lou Lou's is a supper club with a real performance calendar — live music, a dance floor, cocktails, and a room that commits all the way to its own premise. On the right night it hands you dinner, a band, and dancing in one place, without ever moving the car. Build the evening around whoever is playing and let the meal follow the music. Then dress like you are going somewhere, because everybody else in that room will have.

Ramen and pork belly buns on a patio, with no reservation anywhere in the plan. The North Park branch is what to use when the evening cannot afford a production: order at the counter or off your phone, sit outside, eat, go. The bowls arrive rich and salty and are built to be finished. A long service window makes it the answer to the late lunch, the early dinner, and the meal wedged between two other things you already committed to.

Book the sunset. Seneca sits 19 floors up, open to the air, with the skyline laid out along one side and the bay on the other. The kitchen runs Italian through lunch and dinner — pasta, a few tableside flourishes — and the whole room tilts celebratory the moment the light starts to go. Ask for a table on the outer edge when you reserve. This is the one you save for somebody who has never seen this city from above.

At 3 AM, when the city has narrowed down to gas stations, Beginner's Diner is open, because it is always open. Patty melts, shakes, breakfast tacos and the rest of the classic diner canon come out of the Lafayette at whatever hour you happen to want them. The late-night version is the real one: the retro fit-out earns its keep, and ordering breakfast while the rest of the block sleeps is a genuinely good time. Get a shake with whatever else lands on the table.

Order the egg rolls and keep ordering. Fortunate Son cooks Chinese-American food loud and colorful, in portions built for a table that intends to share everything on it. The room is a whole look, the flavors do not hedge, and a group of five leaves happy without much negotiation over what to get. It also does takeout, which is the move on a night when a table for five is more trouble than it is worth. Get two dishes more than seems reasonable and split them down the middle.

Bowling, pool, and cocktails under the Lafayette's roof, running late every night. The Gutter is what to pick when a night needs something to do — the date that would stall across a dinner table goes fine with a ball in hand, and the retro fit-out is committed enough to be funny rather than kitsch. Bring the friends who will talk trash for two hours. Nobody comes here to be impressive, which is exactly why the place works.
