Tacos El Gordo makes the best tacos in San Diego, and the adobada is why. It
sits on Broadway in Chula Vista, it runs a separate line for every meat, and it
stays open long past the hour you should reasonably be eating tacos. Get the
adobada. Then get another one.
Most of this lives south and east — Chula Vista, Barrio Logan, City Heights,
Bonita — where the food comes through a window or across a counter and the
ordering system is something you work out while standing in it. Two are
downtown, which is where the list gets later at night and more inventive.
Come hungry, bring someone to split with, and order at least one taco you have
never tried before.
For the deeper seafood decision, use the fish-taco ranking
and the best mariscos guide. The
essential San Diego dishes guide puts
the adobada and the fish taco in the county's bigger food story, and the
Barrio Logan guide covers the neighborhood
around Fish Guts.
