Pick the right spot at Petco Park and the rest of the day arranges itself around it. That's why the ticket comes first in this guide, ahead of the bag, the trolley and the tri-tip, and why it's worth choosing by what you want to see before you ever look at a price.

Start with how your group likes to watch a game. The upper infield seats give you a full-field view, so you can follow a play from the pitch to the throw to first. They suit the fan who keeps score, or at least means to. Gallagher Square is built for a different kind of afternoon. It's standing-room access with room to roam, good for a group that would rather drift, snack and catch innings as they come than stay put for all nine.

Next comes shade. Pull up the ballpark's seating chart and its sun-shade map side by side. On a hot day game, a shaded section can matter more than sitting a few rows closer to the dirt, and the map shows you which sections are which before you commit.

Only then look at price. Padres tickets use dynamic pricing, so what's available, and what it costs, moves from date to date. A friend's price from last month tells you very little about your game. Check the exact date you want and compare from there.

One detail deserves a slow read. A Gallagher Square ticket doesn't guarantee a conventional assigned seat. For a group that plans to wander, that's the appeal. For anyone expecting a chair for every inning, it's worth knowing before checkout, so read the ticket type carefully and buy through the Padres or MLB.

Move two happens before anyone leaves the house, and it's the least glamorous job on this list. It's also the one that saves the most grief at the Petco Park gate.

Sit down with your phone on home wifi and open the MLB Ballpark app. Pull up every ticket for the group, count the seats, and match each one to a person. If someone sent you tickets, confirm the transfer actually arrived. Home is the right place to find out it didn't, with time to text them and fix it. A transfer that never showed up is a bad thing to discover in the gate line.

The barcode that gets you into Petco Park is live, and it rotates. That means an old screenshot of your ticket may not scan when you reach the front. Save each ticket to your phone's wallet instead, so it's one tap away when the line moves.

Theme games add a wrinkle worth knowing about. When a game comes with theme-game merchandise, the item goes with the matching package for that specific game, and a regular ticket for the same night won't cover it. If one person in the group bought the package, make sure that ticket is on the phone of whoever plans to pick up the item.

Last, charge the phone before you walk out the door. Your ticket lives on it now, and so does the group text that tells everyone where to meet.

Petco Park lets you walk in with your own dinner, which turns a Padres game into a picnic with a scoreboard. The rules for doing it are specific. They're also easy to meet if you pack with them in mind, and that's what this move is for.

Start with the bag. You get one of two choices: a single-compartment clear plastic bag no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a clutch or purse no bigger than 5 by 7 inches. Measure yours at home with a tape measure. It takes a minute, and it's a lot easier than finding out at security.

Then the food. Wrap it or bag it so nothing can spill, and slice or section anything you could throw. In practice, the apple goes in as slices, the orange goes in as segments, and the sandwich stays in its wrapper. For drinks, each guest can carry one factory-sealed liter of still, clear, unflavored water, or one empty reusable bottle that isn't glass. The seltzer stays home.

If a bag doesn't make the cut, there's a backup. Four Lock & Go locker stations charge a flat $14 and open an hour before the gates do. You'll find them at the Lexus Premier Lot, at Tony Gwynn Drive and L Street, at Balboa Gate and at East Village Gate. Infant bags and medical bags go through their own separate screening, so parents and anyone carrying medical supplies can plan for that extra step.

The simplest way to a Padres game runs on rails. The Green Line pulls into Gaslamp Quarter station, one block from Petco Park, and that short walk changes the whole shape of game day. If somebody in the group has to drive, make parking a decision you finish at home. Prepay an official or authorized space before you leave. Meters inside the active special-event zone run $10 an hour during the posted window, so a meter makes for a pricey improvisation. For accessible parking, the 6th and K Parkade has spaces at $15, first come, first served.

Two blocks from the gates, at 715 J Street in East Village, Bub's at the Ballpark is where this game day stops for a drink. Bub's is a sports bar with big, game-day energy, and that noise is part of the draw. It's a good room for shifting out of errand mode and into baseball mode, especially with a group. On major matchups the room fills well before first pitch, so on a big night, earlier is better.

The order is short. Tots and wings are the signatures, the two things reviewers bring up again and again, and they're easy to put in the middle of the table for everyone. Add one beer. Keeping it to one is about timing more than restraint: there are still two blocks of downtown sidewalk and a gate line between you and your seat, and in a game-day crowd those two blocks take real time.

Check the hours on the day you go. Bub's opens early, at 10 a.m., for some Padres home games. On a non-game day, doors open at 11 a.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday, closing at 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and midnight Friday and Saturday. Giveaway nights need a plan of their own. Promotional items are limited and tied to a specific date, and holding a ticket doesn't promise there's one left when you walk in. On a regular night, those 90 minutes are the room you have for the next two moves: a lap of the concourse and one good food order, with time left to find your seat and settle in before the first pitch.

Once you're through the gate at Petco Park, the pull is to head straight for your seat. Take the long way instead. One slow lap of the concourse before first pitch is a smart way to meet the ballpark, and it's easiest while the crowd is still building.

The last move is the ride home, and the trick is to make that decision early, while you still have innings to spare. Before the ninth, pick your station. Gaslamp Quarter is one block from Petco Park on the Green Line. 12th & Imperial serves the Blue and Orange lines, plus bus connections. Settle it with your group while everyone is still in their seats, so nobody has to decide on the move.

Then stay for the final out. With the plan already made, you get to watch the last pitch, and the cheer or the groan that follows, instead of watching the exits.
