Open the official seat map before you open a price filter. Upper infield is the value play: the whole field in front of you, for less money than the rows down near the dirt. Gallagher Square suits a group that would rather stand and wander than sit in an assigned seat. On a hot day game the sun-shade map is the more useful of the two maps, and it is the one almost nobody opens. Pull up the exact date you want, buy the view, and let the rest of the day fall in behind it.

Do the boring one at home, on wifi, before anybody is in a car. Open every ticket in the MLB Ballpark app, check that each person and each seat is actually in there, and save the pass to your phone wallet where the app supports it. The barcode rotates, so a screenshot you took on Tuesday can be dead by Saturday. Theme-game merchandise comes with its own package, which means whoever wants the item needs that exact ticket, bought for that exact game.

Petco lets you carry your own dinner through the gate, which is the easiest money you will ever save at a ballpark. The catch is the container. Food has to be wrapped or bagged so nothing spills, soft-sided throughout, and anything throwable—fruit above all—gets sliced or sectioned first. The bag is a single-compartment clear plastic one no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a clutch under 5 by 7. Then one factory-sealed liter of still, unflavored water each, or one empty reusable bottle that is not glass.

Three trolley lines land you at the ballpark and the walk is short from all of them. The Green Line puts you at Gaslamp Quarter, one block out. Blue and Orange stop at 12th & Imperial and at Park & Market, about two-tenths of a mile. Trains run every 15 minutes or better before games. An adult one-way is $2.50, a PRONTO account caps the whole day at $6, and riders 18 and under go free on Youth PRONTO through June 30, 2027—so a family of four rides in on two fares.

Two blocks from the gates, Bub's is the loud version of a pregame and it knows exactly what it is. Screens on every wall, a bar long enough that you can actually get to it, a room that switches on the second the Padres do. Get the tots—they are the thing people come back for. Wings and cold beer handle the rest, and the staff keep moving when the room goes three deep. Go early, while there is still somewhere to stand and the whole block sounds like the game has already started.

Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch. That is the baseline on an ordinary ticket, and it is the number to build the afternoon around—Season Ticket Members walk in 2 hours early at the Park Boulevard and Home Plate gates, which is why the person next to you swears the park opens sooner than it does. Opening Day, postseason, promotions, and Gallagher Square parties all move the window. Pull up the homestand guide for your date, work backward from the gate it lists, and for a giveaway you actually want, before gates is the only arrival that works.

One slow lap of the concourse and Petco stops being a stadium and starts being a place. Take in the Western Metal building holding down the corner of left field, look down into Gallagher Square, find the skyline over the outfield, and clock the nearest restrooms and food stand while there is still room to walk. Then work out the clean route back to your section, because the concourse tightens up fast near first pitch. Do it once, early, and you spend the rest of the night watching baseball.

Bringing dinner and buying nothing is a completely respectable plan. But if the ballpark is going to feed you, make it the one thing that only happens here: Seaside Market's tri-tip, smoky and piled and the order people come back for. Seaside runs stands at Sections 105, 110, 308, 311, 322, 327 and Gallagher Square, so you are never walking far for it, and it carries the widest gluten-free selection in the park. New this season, Japanese curry from Coco Ichibanya at the Mercado near Section 104. Pick one, take it back to your seat.

Stay for the last out. Extra trains depart as needed once a game ends, so the platform clears while the garages are still inching toward an exit. Know which station you want before the ninth—Gaslamp Quarter is a block out on the Green Line, and 12th & Imperial takes Blue, Orange, and every bus connection, including the nights when the stops nearer the park shut down. Follow event staff, walk out with the crowd, and you are on a train while the rideshare map is still surging.
