One of the largest lath structures in the world sits on El Prado, and it costs nothing to walk into. More than 2,100 permanent plants live under those slats — cycads, ferns, orchids, palms, tropicals — and the light comes through them in stripes. The renovation finished recently and the building looks it. Out front, the lily pond went in for the same 1915 exposition and is where most people in the park end up pointing a camera. Get there in the first hour after opening, while you can still hear the water.

The Zoo is the one thing here that will take a whole day, and it holds up for the whole day. The collection is enormous, the habitats are genuinely good, and keepers turn up to talk about the animals standing in front of you. Admission covers the Guided Bus Tour and the Skyfari Aerial Tram when both are running; take the bus early to learn the geography, then ride the Skyfari across the canyon instead of walking it. Give it a day of its own and it will fill one.

Most people see the upper garden, photograph the koi, and leave. The ticket earns itself below that, where the path drops through the canyon past waterfalls and seasonal planting into a genuine landscape. It is the quietest paid ground in the park. The Tea Pavilion is there for the recovery, and if the climb back up is the problem, ask at the gate — a shuttle runs from the Lower Garden to the Upper Garden on request. Give the bottom of the canyon a full hour.

236 artists keep studios around this courtyard, and demonstrations run daily — glass being blown, a pot being thrown, someone laying down a Chinese brush painting, all inside the same 20 minutes. Admission is nothing. The Potters' Guild runs Studio 29 as a working ceramics studio with a gallery attached, and it is the easiest door to push open first. Buy something small from the person who made it, while they are standing there making the next one.

The fossils are the reason to go in. Fossil Mysteries walks the region's deep past, Skulls is exactly what the name says and a lot more fun than that sounds, and every film in the Giant Screen Theater comes with the ticket rather than on top of it. Washed Ashore: Art to Save the Sea is up now. Outside, the Nature Trail stays open and free to anyone in the park. Come on a Friday, when Nat at Night keeps the galleries open into the evening.

Palm Canyon drops off the path into shade: more than 450 palms across 58 species, some of them Mexican fan palms that went into the ground in 1912, winding paths underneath, and a wooden footbridge carrying you back out toward the Organ Pavilion. Alcazar Garden is the other register entirely — Moorish tile in turquoise, yellow and green, ornate fountains, a shaded pergola, boxwood edges, and 7,000 annuals replanted through the year, all of it patterned on the gardens in Seville. Walk one straight into the other.

The organ was built in 1915 by the Austin Organ Company and has lived outdoors ever since, which is not how pipe organs are usually treated. It gets played for about an hour every Sunday afternoon, free, in an open-air pavilion with the pipes standing directly in front of the seats. Rain or shine is the official position and they mean it. Come early, sit close, and let an hour go.

125 steps up the inside of the tower, six people at a time, and then 10 to 15 minutes on a viewing deck nobody reaches on their own. On a clear day the view runs about 23 miles out: Pacific Ocean to the west, the Cuyamaca Mountains to the east, the Zoo and the downtown skyline and the Coronado Bridge laid out underneath. The whole thing takes 40 minutes. It is the only way to see the park as a plan rather than a run of buildings.

A docent walks you through 60 to 75 minutes of the park's history, horticulture and architecture, and by the end the buildings stop being a row of handsome facades and turn into an argument somebody was making in 1915. No booking, no ticket, $5 if you feel like it. If those two slots do not work, the first Friday of the month gets you the 5 Flavors Tour instead, which leaves from the Trees for Health Garden at Quince and Balboa Drive and hands out samples along the way.

38 national and cultural groups run this corner of the park, and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons the cottages open their doors, put out refreshments and take donations instead of admission. Nine more cottages went up in 2021. One group takes the lawn at 2 on Sunday afternoons between March and mid-November, for an hour of the songs and dances of that nation. Turn up and let a country you know nothing about explain itself to you.

Styled after Shakespeare's Globe, and it has never stuck to him — modern masters, new work from playwrights nobody has heard of yet, and a family musical every year built for the youngest person you are bringing. The venues are small enough that the acting has nowhere to hide. The walk out afterwards puts you back in the park rather than a parking structure. Pick the production first and let the park handle the second half of the evening.
