The Commons level downstairs is open to anyone: walk in off Plaza de Panama, use the shop, sit with a coffee, and work out afterwards whether the exhibition upstairs is your kind of thing. The shows rotate, so what is hanging when you arrive matters more here than most places. Friday nights it runs late, and that is when the building is at its best.

Historic aircraft and spacecraft, parked close enough that the scale finally lands, with restoration work on view instead of described on a placard. The volunteers know this collection cold and will keep talking as long as you keep asking. Hands-on pieces move younger kids between the big airframes while the adults read every card on the wall. Give it a real block of the day; this is the one out at Pan American Plaza that repays walking that far.

The collection here is planted. Koi, waterfalls, seasonal blooms, and cultural exhibitions unfold down a slope somebody sequenced on purpose, and the lower garden is a payoff the entrance gives no hint of. The Tea Pavilion is part of the visit. Last admission is 6, which makes this the rare stop you can still begin at 5 — go then, when the light drops into the trees and the paths have emptied out.

The layouts are big enough to walk along, and the trains are moving rather than parked. What gets people is the detail — regional scenes built at a scale where you keep finding things you missed the first time past. The volunteers run the operations and will tell you exactly what you are watching if you ask. Give it more than a doorway glance. This is one of the few rooms in the park where a grandparent and an eight-year-old end up equally absorbed for completely different reasons.

Hands-on science built for people who are still short. Kid City holds the youngest ones while the rest of the floor gives older kids something they can actually operate, and one dome documentary comes with admission — the dome is the part they will talk about in the car. Staff run accessibility mornings for families who need the building quieter. It is also the park's best answer to a rainy day, which San Diego produces just often enough to matter.

$10 buys you a whole photography museum. Exhibitions of photography and film sit in calm galleries at 1649 El Prado, with a separate entrance, separate hours, and a program of its own. It is small enough to see properly in an hour, which is roughly the right length of time to spend looking at pictures anyway. Students, military, and youth 17 and under get in free, which makes the whole thing a rounding error on a park day.
