The 12 Best Ice Cream Shops in San Diego, Ranked

San Diego's best ice cream, gelato, and soft serve—from fresh-spearmint mint chip and pistachio gelato to Asian flavors and vegan scoops.

Pacific Beach Ice Cream is the best ice cream in San Diego. Dad's Mint Chip is the argument-ender — real mint, no candy-shop shortcut — and it comes out of a small Grand Avenue shop where the scoops land bigger than the price led you to expect.

Call it an ice cream list and half of it turns out to be gelato. There is a made-daily case in La Jolla, one in Escondido that rotates 14 to 18 flavors a day, and one in North Park that sells pizza out of the same room. The flavors run to Thai tea and Milo on Convoy, ube in University Heights, and sea-salt caramel with cayenne in it up in Encinitas. Gelato and sorbet count here. Frozen yogurt and shave ice are a different argument.

An's Dry Cleaning won the national readers' vote two years running, and the tour through its case is a genuinely good hour — ask for tastes and let whoever is scooping walk you through it.

Eat it where you buy it. Nothing on this list improves in a car.

Build a neighborhood day around the cone with our Pacific Beach restaurant ranking, Convoy restaurant ranking, or Oceanside restaurant ranking. For the non-frozen side of the city, use the bakery ranking, and families can pair a stop with our things to do with kids guide.

Our pick

Pacific Beach Ice Cream

PACIFIC BEACH$HANDCRAFTEDTHE NEW #1

Mint chip is the flavor most shops get wrong, and this one is green, clean, and nowhere near toothpaste. Everything comes out of the shop itself — the ice cream, the waffle cones, the fruit flavors that move with the season. Scoops land generous, the value is honest, and the person who hands one over is often the person who made it. The room is small and the output is not. Come in summer, when whatever fruit is ripe is also what is in the case.

Order this
Dad's Mint Chip in a house-made waffle cone
Heads up
Street parking only and the shop is tiny. The posted schedule is labeled summer hours, so it may not hold year-round.

Bobboi Natural Gelato

LA JOLLA$MADE DAILYTHE GELATO PICK

Ask for a taste before you commit. They hand out spoons freely here, and somehow the line still moves faster than it looks. Everything is made daily on Girard Avenue, which is why the pistachio arrives tasting like the nut instead of sugar wearing a nut costume, and why the coffee belongs directly beside it. The fruit flavors keep their edges. Vegan scoops get the same care here as the dairy ones, which almost never happens anywhere.

Order this
the pistachio, with the coffee right beside it
Heads up
Weekend lines get long and La Jolla pricing applies, though the queue moves quickly once it starts.

Sunday Ice Cream

CONVOY$ASIAN FLAVORSOPEN LATE

Thai tea here tastes like tea — steeped, tannic, barely sweetened — which is the trick almost nobody pulls off. Milo keeps its malty grit. The case rotates through jasmine milk tea, pandan, and boricha, roasted barley tea that reads more toasted than sweet. Sugar is used as seasoning rather than as the point. Samples come without asking, service is quick, and it stays open late enough to work as a second stop after dinner.

Order this
Thai tea, plus boricha or pandan if the case has them
Heads up
The official schedule is not published anywhere firm and third-party hours disagree, so check the shop's social feed before a late run.

1022 Cafe & Gelateria

OCEANSIDE$ITALIAN NUTSAFFOGATO

The affogato is the reason to make the drive: espresso poured over gelato dense enough to hold its shape while it dissolves. Pistachio is the scoop to put under it — Italian nuts, and more savory than a pistachio flavor has any business being. Dark chocolate goes the other way, deep and unsweet. Texture is not dead even from one visit to the next. The sorbets are vegan and taste like fruit rather than an apology for it, and weekend mornings start early enough here to make gelato a breakfast decision.

Order this
pistachio and dark chocolate; the affogato if you need caffeine
Heads up
The doors open earlier on Saturday and Sunday than on weekdays, so an 8 AM affogato is a real option here.

Little Fox Cups & Cones

OCEANSIDE$$EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCHBIG FLAVORS

London Fog turns strong tea and cream into a scoop, and Banana Pancake tastes like the plate arrived with syrup already on it. That is the register here: flavors built in layers, made from scratch in the Oceanside shop that supplies the others, down to the cones. Mention an allergy and somebody will take it seriously. Not every idea lands for every person — this is a shop with opinions — and the ones that land, land hard.

Order this
London Fog and Banana Pancake, in a cup
Heads up
Street parking is scarce, the room is small, and the house cone is fragile — take a cup if the scoop has to survive a walk.

EscoGelato

ESCONDIDO$MADE DAILYLOCAL FARM FRUIT
4.8 Google (998) Verified Jul 19, 2026

Between 14 and 18 flavors go into the case every day, so the question worth asking in Escondido is what they made this morning. The answer is usually a fruit — local, in season, tasting like it was picked rather than flavored. Texture is the other thing they get right: dense, cold, never gummy. Parking out front is free and easy, which is the small mercy that makes this a regular stop instead of an expedition. Ask what is best today and take that, whatever it is.

Order this
the affogato, plus whatever fruit flavor is freshest
Heads up
The flavor list online is a catalog of everything they have ever made; only what got churned that morning is actually in the case.

Stella Jean's Ice Cream

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS$UBE PANDESALLATE HOURS

Ube Pandesal is the scoop this city should be known for — purple yam ice cream shot through with pandesal, the soft Filipino roll, so the texture keeps interrupting itself. Mango Sticky Rice is the sharper follow-up, fruit acid pushing against coconut. The rest of the case rotates and the staff are genuinely good at steering people through it. This is the Park Boulevard original, and it stays open late enough that a post-dinner detour works on a weeknight.

Order this
Ube Pandesal, with Mango Sticky Rice alongside
Heads up
Parking is scarce and weekend lines are long. The room gets hot in summer, so start on the scoop before it starts on you.

Mariposa Ice Cream

NORMAL HEIGHTS$SINCE 2000THE VALUE PICK
4.8 Google (634) Verified Jul 19, 2026

A family has been making ice cream on Adams Avenue since 2000, and the philosophy has not moved: made in the shop, nothing waxy, nothing that coats your mouth on the way down. Mexican Chocolate is the one to try first — warm-spiced, dark, a little rough in the good way. Cookies-and-cream is the sleeper. Build either into a sundae and the value stops making sense in the best possible direction.

Order this
Mexican Chocolate, then a cookies-and-cream sundae
Heads up
Closed Monday through Wednesday and the room is tight. The family recommends calling ahead before you make the drive.
Thu–Sat 1–9, Sun 2–8; closed Mon–Wed — call ahead

Gelati & Peccati

NORTH PARK$GELATO + PIZZASTRONG VALUE

Banana walnut is the flavor to walk in for — real banana, actual walnut, creamy in a way that has nothing to do with a milkshake. Hazelnut and chocolate hold their own beside it. The gelato shares a University Avenue room with a pizza operation, which sounds like a compromise and turns out to be a bargain, because North Park prices rarely look like this. Staff can drift, so catch someone's eye early. Then work your way down the case; the second flavor is always the one you did not plan on.

Order this
banana walnut, with hazelnut right beside it
Heads up
The Friday and Saturday closing time is not posted consistently, so check before a late run. Flies have turned up near the pizza display.

An's Dry Cleaning

ADAMS AVE$TASTING TOURAWARD CONTEXT, NOT A RANK

The name still says dry cleaning, which tells you nothing about the gelato and everything about the block. What happens inside is a tour: staff walk you across the case one spoon at a time, explaining what they were chasing with each flavor. It is all made from scratch and the lineup rotates every few weeks, so the tour changes too. Mix-ins can get loud when three of them talk at once. Come when you are not in a hurry and leave with whichever flavor surprised you.

Order this
the full tasting pass, then one clean fruit or nut flavor
Heads up
The sampling line runs long at peak and ordering is tasting-led, so budget more time than a scoop shop usually needs.

Niederfrank's Ice Cream

NATIONAL CITY$SINCE 1948OLD-SCHOOL PROCESS

Ice cream has been made in National City since 1948, and it still tastes made rather than manufactured — dense, cold, and without the waxy finish that gives away a supermarket carton. The flavor list runs deep and old-fashioned, and the popular ones do run out. Whoever is working the case is generous with both the scoop and the conversation. Take one to the seating outside, then carry a pint home for later.

Order this
two scoops in the shop and a pint to take home
Heads up
It closes early and seating is outside only. There is a card fee, so bring cash, and call before an evening drive — posted hours conflict.

JoJo's Creamery

ENCINITAS$$ORGANIC DAIRYCOOKIE INCLUDED

Cayenne Sea Salt Caramel is the reason to stop — caramel first, salt second, then a slow heat that shows up after you have already swallowed. Every order arrives with a house-made cookie tucked alongside, regular or gluten-free, which quietly turns a scoop into a dessert. The dairy is organic, and the plant-based flavors are actual flavors, even if they run gentler than the dairy ones. Break the cookie into whatever you ordered and let the heat catch up with you.

Order this
Cayenne Sea Salt Caramel, with the house cookie
Heads up
Lumberyard parking is easy. There is no single scoop — a double is the smallest order — so come hungry or bring somebody to share.

Common questions

What is the best ice cream shop in San Diego?

Pacific Beach Ice Cream, on Grand Avenue. Everything is made in the shop — the ice cream, the waffle cones, the fruit flavors that change with the season — and the mint chip is the one that ends the argument.

Where is the best gelato in San Diego?

Bobboi in La Jolla, for the pistachio and the coffee. If you want the Asian side of the case, Sunday on Convoy. If you are up north, 1022 in Oceanside, where the affogato is the whole reason to walk in.

Which San Diego ice cream shops have vegan options?

JoJo's and Little Fox both keep real plant-based flavors on the board, and Bobboi and 1022 make vegan gelato and sorbets that taste like fruit rather than an afterthought. Availability rotates, so check the case before driving for one specific flavor.

What is the oldest ice cream shop in San Diego?

Niederfrank's, in National City, making ice cream since 1948. The old-fashioned process shows up in the texture — dense and cold, with none of the waxy finish. It closes early, so make it an afternoon stop.

Which San Diego ice cream shops are open late?

Sunday on Convoy and An's on Adams Avenue run the latest, and Stella Jean's on Park Boulevard stays open late enough for a post-dinner detour. Sunday's posted hours have been inconsistent, so check its social feed first.

Where can I get good ice cream in North County?

1022 and Little Fox in Oceanside, EscoGelato in Escondido, and JoJo's in Encinitas. 1022 is the affogato stop, Little Fox builds the biggest flavors, EscoGelato churns 14 to 18 fresh ones a day, and JoJo's includes a cookie with every order.

Which San Diego ice cream shops are cheapest?

Mariposa in Normal Heights and Gelati & Peccati in North Park. Both run a single dollar sign, and both hand you something worth eating for it — Mexican Chocolate at one, banana walnut at the other.

How current are these details?

Locations, hours, open status, and what these shops are actually scooping were all checked on July 19, 2026. Cases rotate daily and several of these shops post seasonal hours, so check the same day before a long drive.
