6 Places Worth Your Time in Scripps Ranch

Five paved miles around a city reservoir, with just 78 feet of total climb. The Miramar Reservoir Loop in Scripps Ranch is the easiest yes in the neighborhood and the anchor for everything else on this list. It's rated easy, it's paved from start to finish, and it works for a distance runner, a stroller and a kid on a bike in the same hour. That range is what puts it at #1. Hardly any outing in this part of the county works for that many people at once.

Worth knowing before you go: this is a working drinking-water reservoir for the City of San Diego. That's why it's staffed and gated, why it closes on the first Tuesday of every month for maintenance, and why the water itself is off-limits. No swimming, no wading, no paddleboards. The rest of the month it's open daily from sunrise to sunset, and the public entrance is on Scripps Lake Drive.

The people who love this loop describe a well-kept, flat road with an ocean breeze, and they use it for just about everything: jogging, biking, rollerblading, picnicking and fishing. Parking is plentiful, and there are restrooms and picnic benches. Keep an eye on the upper pasture near the parking lot, too. Reviewers spotted goats grazing up there in March 2026, which is a nice bonus for the kid on the bike.

Plan for sun. Shade is rare almost the entire way around, so bring water and a hat and start early. Weekend mornings crowd the first mile, so a weekday start is the calm version. Bikes are capped at 10 mph, dogs stay leashed and at least 50 feet from the water, and glass containers stay in the car.

Bringing a rod? Fishing permits are $10 for adults 16 to 65, $7 for seniors 65 and up, $5 for ages 8 to 15, and free for kids 7 and under, and they're cash or check only. Launching a private boat is $10, or $7 for a kayak or canoe. The ramp closed this summer, July 17 through August 21, for water-treatment-plant maintenance, so check its status before you hitch up a trailer. When you're done, Harland Brewing's taproom is a short drive away in Carroll Canyon.

Harland Brewing's Scripps Ranch taproom is where a reservoir morning turns into an afternoon. It sits in a Carroll Canyon industrial park, the beer is brewed right there in the building, and the draft list ran 26 beers deep this summer. There's wine now too, so the friend who doesn't drink beer has something to order.

The yard is what turns a pint into a meal. The Ocotillo Outdoor Kitchen serves real plates out there, and the lemon pepper wings and waffle fries are the favorites people name. Inside you'll find pool tables, games and Harland merch. Service gets credit for being fast and full of suggestions, which helps when you're staring down 26 taps. If sours are your thing, the pandan mai tai and the li hing mui are the two that draw specific praise.

Harland is a local family of five tasting rooms around San Diego County. Besides this one, you'll find Harland in Bay Park, South Park and 4S Ranch, plus a clubhouse at Mission Bay Golf Course.

Timing is the main thing to plan. The kitchen wraps up before the taproom does: food stops at 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, so eat before the last stretch of the night. Friday live-music nights fill the seats fast. Weekdays have two easy windows: from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., any burger or sandwich comes with fries and a beer for $20, and pints are $1 off from 3 to 6 p.m.

It sits at #2 because it's open seven days a week into the evening with room for a group, and parking is plentiful. The reservoir edges it out by working for more kinds of days, but for the afternoon half of a Scripps Ranch plan, this is the stop.

On Scripps Trail, a fifth-generation baker is making bread for his own neighbors. The French Oven Scripps Ranch belongs to Chef Yves Fournier and his wife, Susie, who live in the neighborhood. Yves grew up in Veyrier du Lac, a village at the base of the French Alps, and he's the fifth generation of bakers in his family. The proof hangs on the wall: a family bakery sign from 1840. TV coverage tied to the Paris Olympics brought the shop wider attention.

Start with breakfast. The ham-and-cheese croissant comes with Swiss and béchamel, and the breakfast sandwich stacks bacon, scrambled egg and cheddar on a croissant. Fans praise the pastries, croissants and breakfast sandwiches, and there's a seasonal latte and rotating specials, too. On Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., there's also an outdoor stand making fresh crepes.

Then think about the bread you're taking home. The core bread list covers baguettes and batards ($4.50 each) and sourdough ($7). From Friday through Sunday it grows: brioche, garlic sourdough, jalapeño-cheddar sourdough, kalamata-olive sourdough and pretzels, $8 each. A bread list that changes across the week, from a baker with five generations behind him, is what lands The French Oven at #3, just ahead of Buon Cibo. Harland's longer hours keep it one spot higher.

A little planning goes a long way here. The bakery is closed Mondays, seating is a handful of outdoor tables, the parking spaces are very small, and weekends get crowded. A weekday croissant is the easy version. A weekend trip gets you the crepes and the specialty loaves, so it's worth the extra patience.

Buon Cibo means "good food" in Italian, and at this Spring Canyon Road deli in Scripps Ranch, the name comes with a family story. Founder Tom Tarantino's grandparents, Pietro Tarantino and Gaetano D'Acquisto, were Sicilian fishermen who came to San Diego in the early 1900s. The family has lived in Scripps Ranch for more than four decades, and the recipes draw on its roots in Porticello, Sicily.

The sandwich to get is the Spicy Sicilian, an 8-inch build with meat, stracciatella, hot honey, pepperoncini, arugula and tapenade. That's creamy cheese, sweet heat, peppery greens and briny tapenade in one sandwich. Fans of the counter point to crisp bread, generous portions and friendly service.

There's more here than the deli counter. The shop stocks 102 bottles of restaurant-quality wine sold at market prices, there's a sit-down space called the Palermo Room, and the desserts are made in-house: tiramisu, panettone bread pudding and cannoli.

The insider move is the set dinners, and they take a little planning. Friday Night Dinner for Two is chicken breast in a mushroom butter sauce with mashed potatoes. Sugo Sunday is rigatoni in tomato sugo with a meatball, Italian sausage, cheese, basil and garlic bread. Both are pre-order only, due by 8 p.m. the night before, so set a reminder for Thursday or Saturday evening. Walk in without one and the counter menu is yours.

Buon Cibo opens at 9 a.m. every day, which makes it the easiest stop on this list to fit into any plan. It lands at #4 only because The French Oven's weekend bread is even harder to find anywhere else.

Since 1985, Scripps Ranch has spent a few Sunday evenings a year on the lawn at Hoyt Park, listening to live music. Symphony in the Park is a four-decade neighborhood tradition, and it's the one entry on this list you plan by the calendar.

This year's calendar scheduled Rolling Heartbreakers for August 9 and Big Time Operator for September 13, both from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and it lists a Holiday Concert on December 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The organizer posts the band and the time for every remaining show, which is more detail than most neighborhood series give you. Dates can still shift, so check the organizer's calendar the week of the concert.

The house rules are part of the charm. Bring a beach or sand chair, low enough that everyone behind you gets a view. Leave the dog at home. Tarps are out too, because plastic kills the grass. And pack a picnic, since an evening concert on the lawn is basically an invitation to one. Buon Cibo is open until 8 p.m. daily, so a couple of Spicy Sicilians make an easy dinner plan.

The reason it's #5 is simple: it happens a handful of times a year and can't answer "what should we do this week" the way the places above it can. When a concert is on, it's the most Scripps Ranch way to spend a Sunday evening. Hoyt Park is at 10800 Canyon Lake Drive.

Sharetea Scripps Mesa is the evening hangout on this list: a boba shop on Mira Mesa Boulevard, at the edge of Scripps Ranch, with plenty of seating, a claw machine and board games to play while your drink is made. It's one of many Sharetea shops around the country, and what earns this one a spot is the room and the crew behind the counter, who will build a drink to order for you.

That makes the custom fruit tea the fun order. Ask the counter to put one together, and add popping boba or lychee jelly, the two toppings fans call out. If you'd rather pick off the menu, the best sellers are Matcha Red Bean, Coffee Milk Tea, Lime Mojito, Peach Kiwi Tea, Thai Pearl Milk Tea and Classic Pearl Milk Tea.

Two planning notes. Tapioca pearls can vary a bit from batch to batch, so if chewy pearls are what you're after, ask about the current batch, or go with popping boba or lychee jelly. And if it's a Friday or Saturday night, give the shop a call before you head over late.

Sixth place comes down to story, since the places above it carry more of the neighborhood's own. What Sharetea adds is a place to sit down, play a round of something and end the day with a drink after the bakery and the deli have closed.
