19 verified places · 9 eat & drink and 6 things-to-do listsLiberty Station is the old Naval Training Center, Spanish Colonial Revival barracks off Rosecrans Street rebuilt into working artist studios, galleries and a market hall, with a boat channel running the length of it. It is flat, it is close together, and one parked car puts you in walking range of all of it.
North across Rosecrans, the Midway District handles the errands. Sports Arena Boulevard and Midway Drive hold barbecue, used record bins, a genre bookstore in the shopping center at Rosecrans and Midway, and an arena parking lot that turns into a thousand-seller market Friday through Sunday. Come here to buy something and eat.
Then the water. Harbor Island curves off Harbor Drive at the bottom of the district, and the shoreline path there looks straight back at downtown with the Coronado Bay Bridge behind it. The channel path at NTC Park runs a mile from Chauncey Road to the Halsey Road footbridge, benches most of the way, planes dropping in low over the water.
Start on Historic Decatur Road, eat, then pick a direction: north for the ribs and the sellers, south for the light on the water.
