Come on a Friday or Saturday in summer and the shoreline stays open to midnight, long after the coast has gone quiet. The fishing and the night sky both come good then. Campsites look straight down at the water with hookups at the pad, and people come back for the staff as much as the view. Nothing about it is casual — every rod needs paperwork and the gate moves with the season. Get the reservation, pick your window, and take the last hour of light on the water.

A 1.3-mile line of trail runs from Magnolia Ave out to Lakeside along the San Diego River, flat the whole way and wide enough that walkers, bikes and horses all fit. There is a mister out here for cooling off, plus a drinking fountain and a bike repair station — somebody thought about July. Murals cover the underside of the Magnolia bridge, and old farm and mining artifacts stand along the route with panels telling you what they were. Take the kids and let them find the artifacts.

Nearly 400 acres of chaparral and manzanita climb the hill off Wildcat Canyon Rd, with a signed 2.5-mile loop cut through them and mountain views opening where the woodland thins. This is the one walk out here that feels like actual backcountry instead of a park with a path through it. Rangers run stargazing nights up here when the County calendar has one, and the sky out this far is worth staying for. Go early, take the loop, and let it be the whole morning.

The disc-golf course is the reason to come — a real round, in a city park, for the price of a coffee. Around it the park keeps 2 miles of lighted trails, an off-leash dog run split for big dogs, small dogs and puppies, and cornhole and table tennis for whoever did not want to throw. Lighting on those trails is what makes the whole place work in July, when the afternoon is unusable and the evening is not. Bring a set of discs and let everybody else find their own thing.

The ducks run this lake. They own the shallows, the pelicans turn up to argue about it, and a flat 1.5-mile path loops the whole thing with fitness stations and a gazebo set along the way. There is a butterfly garden and a children's TRACK Trail for anyone small, and a skatepark on the same grounds for anyone who came to do something louder. The path costs nothing, and the trees do enough work to make a July morning out here pleasant.
