Grand Tradition is a working wedding estate that lets the public walk in, and the grounds are held to the standard weddings demand. Waterfalls drop through tropical planting, a heart-shaped lake sits under a lakeside gazebo, Mediterranean beds run along the Arbor Terrace gardens, and one garden is laid out around a compass. Amateur photography is welcome anywhere on the property. Take the long way around — the Orchid Bar and the Compass Garden sit well past the lake, and most people never get that far.

The Bates family has been working this farm together for over a hundred years, and the everyday version of the place needs no festival attached to it. The Farm Zoo runs daily — alpacas, goats, sheep, geese, a mini-donkey, and an emu. Inside the store there are barrels of salt water taffy, a candy counter of homemade fudge, and roasted pistachios, pecans, and cashews. Out back there are trees to eat under, which is the entire argument for packing a lunch.

Pablo Ranea came from Mendoza and cooks Argentina over open flame on a hilltop of vines above Valley Center. Start with handmade empanadas — chorizo, veggie, salteña, mendocina — and the provoleta, then take the Uruguayan skirt steak or the Argentinian ribeye straight off the live fire. The wine is made right here by Steve Michaliszyn: Ranch House Red, Tempranillo, a Grenache rosé, poured by the glass or as a flight. Dulce de leche flan is how it ends.

Six exhibitions rotate through here in a year, and the one opening in September is the 29th Annual Glass Exhibition — a run that long says something about how seriously this town takes it. Winter brings the Baja exhibition, spring the 17th Annual Signature Watermedia show, and the holiday show carries from November into January. It is one focused room rather than a wing — an hour, not an afternoon, and it slots neatly between two outdoor stops. Whatever is on the walls will be gone in six weeks.

Wild Wonders runs entirely on appointments, and what it books you is time standing beside the animal itself — fennec foxes, wallabies, bearcats, a serval, pacas, reptiles — with an educator next to you explaining what you are looking at. This is the closest most people in the county will ever stand to a bearcat. The care the animals get shows in how they are handled, and the educators are what turn a novelty into something a kid still talks about a year later.

The canopy is the draw here: 27 acres of oak forest, shade complete enough that a family reunion disappears under it. Below the trees sit three softball fields, soccer and volleyball and basketball courts, two playgrounds, six reservable picnic areas, an amphitheater, and horseshoe pits, while woodpeckers and hawks work the branches overhead. The leash-free area at Reche and Gird runs 3,000 square feet with its own parking lot, restroom, benches, and drinking fountains for the dogs. Spread out and stay a while.
