Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve
The river runs five miles through this preserve under oak and sycamore, and the land around it — 1,384 acres of it — climbs away into chaparral and coastal sage scrub. The Fallbrook Trails Council keeps roughly 18 miles of hiking and equestrian trail across the property, so a single trailhead covers both a flat hour beside the water and a genuinely long day above it. Dogs come on leash. The place is set up for birdwatching and wildflowers as much as for mileage, so bring something to look through.
