SeaWorld, LEGOLAND or Belmont Park: Picking the Right Day

LEGOLAND California opened in Carlsbad on March 20, 1999, the first LEGOLAND park built anywhere outside Europe. The LEGO Group built it and ran it until Merlin Entertainments took a controlling interest in 2005, and the park kept growing from there: a SEA LIFE Aquarium in August 2008, the first SEA LIFE in the United States, and a water park in May 2010.

It leads this guide because it answers the question most parents are really asking. The park says in plain words who it's built for: families with children between the ages of 2 and 12. For that crew there are more than 60 kid-powered rides, shows and attractions. SeaWorld actually scored a little higher in our overall ratings, and it gets its due at number two. But if the people you're planning around are mostly under 12, LEGOLAND is the park designed with them in mind.

Reviewers keep praising the ride variety for kids of all ages, from families bringing a whole 2-to-12 lineup to a crew celebrating a seventh birthday. The SEA LIFE Aquarium, the submarine ride and the LEGO creations are what people bring up most. A standard theme-park ticket includes SEA LIFE entry, so you get a second stop on the same day without buying anything extra.

Now the planning. Buy online: at our last check, theme-park tickets started at $79 online against $139 at the front gate for the same day. Kids under 2 get in free. Hours move around even from one day to the next. The theme park ran 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 30 and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 31, 2026, so check your exact date.

LEGOLAND is a North County day. The park doesn't publish a drive time from San Diego, so map it from wherever you're staying, and know that the parking toll opens 45 minutes before the resort does if you like an early start.

SeaWorld San Diego is the park for a group that can't agree on anything except wanting one big day together. It sits on the shore of Mission Bay at 500 SeaWorld Drive, and it's the original SeaWorld. Four UCLA graduates, George Millay, Milton Shedd, David Demott and Ken Norris, opened it on March 21, 1964, on 22 acres with sea lion and dolphin exhibits. Shamu the orca debuted the next year and became the park's long-running icon.

If LEGOLAND is built around the under-12 crowd, SeaWorld is the one that stretches across ages: marine life shows, thrill rides, aquariums and up-close time with dolphins and penguins, all behind one gate. Reviewers bring up the orca show more than anything else, followed by the dolphin show, the sea lion show and the sea animals in general. One summed it up by saying there's so much to do that you can easily spend the whole day. That's exactly how to plan it. Beyond the shows, SeaWorld's parks say their rescue programs have helped roughly 40,000 injured or threatened animals.

Start with the calendar. SeaWorld says its hours vary by day and season, so check your exact date first and then give the park the whole slot. At our last check, single-day tickets started at $59.99 for ages 3 and up, and kids under 2 get in free. Tickets expire six months after purchase, and parking, taxes and service fees are extra. Families with little ones should also look at the Kids Free Any Day Ticket, which let a child 9 or under in free with a paid adult ticket at $99.99; that eTicket expires October 30, 2026.

Reserved parking came in three tiers: $35 general, $55 for the first six rows and $77 for VIP spots nearest the entrance. Add it to the ticket price before you compare parks.

The Giant Dipper opened on the Mission Beach boardwalk on July 4, 1925, and a century later it's still giving rides. Belmont Park opened that same day as the Mission Beach Amusement Center, a $2.5 million project led by sugar magnate John D. Spreckels, with the Dipper as its centerpiece. Frank Prior and Frederick Church designed it, a crew of 100 to 150 people built it in about two weeks, and it opened as the largest coaster on the West Coast, with about 2,800 feet of track and 75-foot hills. Today it's one of the oldest roller coasters still operating in the country.

It nearly didn't make it. The coaster closed in December 1976 after falling into disrepair. A group of locals called the Save the Coaster Committee got the Giant Dipper designated a National Landmark, and the San Diego Coaster Company formed in 1990 and put about $2 million into restoring it.

Belmont is third because it plays a different game. SeaWorld and LEGOLAND are single-gate, full-day parks. Belmont sells its fun by the ride, right on the boardwalk next to the sand, so it slots into a beach day instead of taking one over. Universal Tickets come in packs of 10, 16 or 30, plus a Bonus Pack. They work on rides or attractions, they don't expire, and leftovers carry over to your next visit. Staying longer? The Ride & Play wristband covers unlimited rides and attractions for the day plus two turns on the zipline. It was $64.95 at our last check and $34 on Wednesdays.

Reviewers keep mentioning the arcade, the boardwalk, the sunset views and, of course, the wooden coaster, and one described ride lines of five minutes or less. Beyond the Dipper you'll find go-karts, mini golf, an arcade and a playground. At the July check, a Sunset Savings deal took $20 off a Ride & Play pass during the park's last four hours, a nice match for those sunset views. Parking is easy to plan, too: Belmont has four free public lots for guests.

Here's a question worth asking before you buy a single ticket: how many times will you really go? For locals, and for visitors staying long enough to fit a park twice, a return-visit deal can change the whole comparison between SeaWorld and Belmont Park.

SeaWorld has the most ways to come back. At our last check, the Any Day Ticket + 2nd Visit Free was $59.99 a person for two visits, with both used by September 30, 2026. The 2026 Fun Card was $99.99 for unlimited visits through December 31, 2026. Both are non-transferable and non-refundable. If you want two days and not a whole year, the Two-Day Ticket was $89.99 for two visits within six months, and a Two-Day + All-Day Dining version was $169.99.

Belmont Park answers with a $101 season pass: 365 days of unlimited rides and attractions, no block-out dates and 12 free Bring-a-Buddy days. Belmont says the pass pays for itself in just two visits. Passholders also get 20% off Escapology escape rooms and $10 off Plunge pool passes. The pass belongs to one named person, it doesn't cover arcade and prize games, and it isn't refundable.

So put a realistic second date on the calendar before you buy. If that date is real, these deals do a lot of the math for you. If it's a maybe, compare the single-visit options and keep it simple. This one is a SeaWorld and Belmont question; LEGOLAND's ticket basics are up in the first entry.

Parking is the line item that sneaks up on people. At two of these three parks it moves real money, so it belongs in the ticket comparison from the very start.

SeaWorld sells reserved parking in three tiers. At our last check, general parking was $35, the first six rows near the entrance were $55, and VIP spots in the closest section were $77. Because it's reserved, you know the full day's cost before you leave home. LEGOLAND charged $40 for cars and motorcycles, with preferred parking from $45 and day valet from $55. Standard parking comes included with LEGOLAND's Platinum and Elite annual passes, and the parking toll opens 45 minutes before the resort does. Belmont Park keeps it simple, with four free public lots for guests during the day.

Put the numbers side by side and the comparison shifts. A family weighing SeaWorld's $59.99 starting ticket against LEGOLAND's $79 online ticket should add $35 to one and $40 to the other before deciding. Belmont's free lots are a nice bonus when a shorter beach-side visit fits your plans.

Need a stroller or some mobility help? SeaWorld rents strollers and manual wheelchairs for $40 each and electric scooters with a canopy for $110, so price those in with the parking.

The closing time decides how much park your ticket actually buys, and at these three it moves around. Each one posts its hours one date at a time, so the time you remember from a past trip may be different on your day.

Here's how the calendars looked on dates in late July and early August 2026. LEGOLAND's theme park closed at 7 p.m. on July 30 and 8 p.m. on July 31, and its water park closed earlier, at 5:30 p.m. both days. Belmont Park's July calendar ran to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, with an early 3:30 p.m. closure on July 31 for a private event. SeaWorld closed at 9 p.m. or 10 p.m., depending on the date.

Those are snapshots from different days, so treat them as examples and keep them out of a same-day comparison. Both big parks say so themselves. LEGOLAND notes that operating days, hours, attraction availability and show schedules may change without notice, and SeaWorld tells guests that hours vary by day and season.

Getting a late start, or working around a midday nap? A later closing time buys back the evening. Open all three calendars for your exact date and work backward from the gate.

Sticker prices only tell part of the story. What each ticket carries past the gate can make a pricier ticket the better deal, or turn a bundle into something your group never uses.

LEGOLAND's standard theme-park ticket already includes SEA LIFE Aquarium, so the aquarium is part of your day whether you planned for it or not. This summer the park also ran a 2 Parks Resort Hopper that added the water park from $78 a person against $164 at the front gate. That offer ended August 9, 2026, so look for whatever has replaced it. Bringing a toddler to the water park? Admission for ages 12 to 23 months was $5, bought at Water Park guest services. And the Hotel + 2-Day Hopper package priced park access at $39 a person per day across the two parks.

SeaWorld's add-ons are about food and lines. The Single-Day + All-Day Dining ticket was $99.99 and covers one entree, one side or dessert, and a fountain drink every 90 minutes. It doesn't cover water bottles or alcohol. The $149.99 Ultimate Bundle adds unlimited Quick Queue.

At Belmont Park, the $64.95 Ride & Play wristband already includes two zipline turns, which is worth weighing before you pay for the zipline separately. Pick the extra your group will really use, and price it in.
