The neighborhood itself

The College Area eats on El Cajon Boulevard. The counters run from El Cerrito into Rolando — Lebanese, vegan, Mexican, halal, Southern — and you never have to set foot on the San Diego State campus to get at any of them.

The cooking is fast, owner-run and priced for people counting money. A real Lebanese oven at Alforon turns out zaatar and lahm bajeen all afternoon. Further east, Ben & Esther's is a hundred percent vegan and still builds a corned-beef Reuben. By eight in the morning Chuy's already has carne asada fries going.

Rolando starts where the campus stops: meandering streets over rolling hills, acorn lampposts, and eight public catwalks cut between the houses. It was laid out in the 1920s and built through the postwar boom. El Cerrito runs the other way, west toward City Heights.

Come at lunch and work east. Alforon to Chuy's is about twenty minutes on foot, and there is something worth stopping for most of the way.

Know before you go

Parking: the streets around campus fall inside the city's Area B SDSU/College permit district, where curb parking is permit-only Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm — read the sign on the block before you walk away

Getting here: the Green Line runs to SDSU Transit Center on campus, about a mile north of the food; Rapid 215 runs the Boulevard itself, downtown to SDSU

Timing: Rise stops serving at 2pm and Alforon is closed Monday and Tuesday, so check the counter you came for before you drive over
