Be honest about the wreckage: Bolt Brewery closed in 2024, Hooleys poured its last in March, and Por Favor gave up the best corner in town in June after nearly 40 years. What held is worth the drive — patios down the Boulevard, a Friday market on the street itself, a fifteen-deep sour list at the last brewery standing, and first light from the 1925 amphitheater on Mount Helix. The two best kitchens out here sit in strip malls. That's La Mesa: unglamorous, verified, still standing.
