The neighborhood itself

La Mesa isn't a San Diego neighborhood — it's its own city, twenty minutes east of downtown, with an early-1900s main street locals call the Village and an Orange Line stop one block off it. Be honest about the wreckage: Bolt Brewery closed in 2024, Hooleys poured its last in March, and Por Favor gave up the best corner in town in June after nearly 40 years. What held is worth the drive — patios down the Boulevard, a Friday market on the street itself, a fifteen-deep sour list at the last brewery standing, and first light from the 1925 amphitheater on Mount Helix. The two best kitchens out here sit in strip malls. That's La Mesa: unglamorous, verified, still standing.

Know before you go

Trolley: Orange Line — the La Mesa Blvd station is one block off the Village strip

Parking: Village street parking is free but 2-hour — and the market takes the 4th-to-Palm blocks on Fridays

Mt Helix: 12 spots at the summit — park the lower lot at 10105 Vivera Dr and walk up; summer gates close 7pm
