10 verified places · 3 eat & drink and 1 things-to-do listsDrive Clairemont Mesa Boulevard east far enough and Tierrasanta simply stops: last driveway, then a gate into 8,000 acres of Mission Trails with about 60 miles of trail behind it. The gate opens at 8 a.m. That is the reason most people point a car up either mesa in the first place.
The eating happens in plazas rather than on any one street. Santo Road and Tierrasanta Boulevard east of the 15, Greyling Drive and Aero Drive west of it, plus the little Birdland grid where most of the streets carry the name of a bird. Peruvian sandwiches in one plaza, congee with a Chinese donut in another, eight seats at a sushi counter in a third.
Serra Mesa got a canyon walk of its own in April 2026. It picks up beside the middle school on Gramercy Drive, follows Ruffin Canyon south, and ducks through a tunnel under Friars Road into Mission Valley — you walk in from one neighborhood and come out in the next one.
Start early. Coffee first, on Santo Road or Greyling Drive, then the gate at 8, then a counter for lunch.

Getting here: drive: the 15 runs between the two mesas, and Friars Road runs the canyon below Serra Mesa
Don’t miss: the 8 a.m. gate at the east end of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard — it locks again at 7 p.m. through October
