The small lot on Golfcrest Drive goes early and the surrounding streets take the overflow, and 1.5 miles later you are standing at 1,592 feet on the highest ground in the city.
Mission Trails does most of the work out here. It runs down through Mission Gorge, with the old stone dam and the tent sites beside Kumeyaay Lake up at the north end, the visitor center looking out over the canyon, and 3.2 flat paved miles along Lake Murray at the south. Walking any of it costs nothing.
The rooms worth sitting in are in strip centers, which is how San Carlos and Del Cerro have always worked. Navajo Road and Jackson Drive have the morning and the sushi counter, Lake Murray Boulevard has dinner, Del Cerro Boulevard is where a liquor store grew a bistro around itself. Head west into Grantville, off Friars Road, and the tap list and the screens get bigger.
Carry more water than you think you need, and plan to eat afterward.
