At the top, in the plaza between Comstock and Ulric, a free lot wraps an Asian supermarket and a row of kitchens — cumin-dusted skewers cooking past midnight, northeastern Thai next door, pho from 8 in the morning. The roller rink sits at the same end of the block with a lot of its own. Every Thursday afternoon the plaza lot fills with produce stands.
Follow the road southwest and the cooking changes with it. Where Linda Vista Road meets Morena Boulevard you get a Sicilian dining room that has been in the same family since 1970, a counter folding steak and shrimp into one tortilla, and a Napa Street room with a dance floor and a band on it most nights.
Plan on driving. The two ends are three miles apart with nothing walkable between them, and most plates land between $10 and $20.
Come Thursday for the market and stay for the grill, or come at 11 on a Friday night, when the charcoal at the top of the road is only getting going.
