Rancho Santa Fe

Rancho Santa Fe is eucalyptus and white fences and long gravel driveways, laid out around a village of a few white-stucco blocks at Paseo Delicias. Park once. The whole center of town is a five-minute walk end to end.

Start at the farm stand. The Chino family has worked the ground on Calzada del Bosque since the late 1940s, and what is on the stand was cut that morning — sweet corn, strawberries, tomatoes, cash or Venmo, closed Monday and Tuesday. On Sunday the stand shuts at 1 and the market runs in the Del Rayo Village lot on San Dieguito Road, 9:30 to 2, every week of the year.

Eating is a village matter. Thyme in the Ranch does breakfast on a patio off Avenida de Acacias until 10:30 and pie after that. Mille Fleurs has been the occasion dinner on Paseo Delicias since 1985, with piano Friday and Saturday at 8:30. Nick & G's opens its terrace at 4 for wood-fired pizza. The Pony Room, out at Rancho Valencia, runs from 7 in the morning straight through to 9 at night — ask for the back patio.

Then there is the outdoors part, which is closer than it looks. A gravel lot off Del Dios Highway just past Calle Ambiente opens onto the Coast to Crest Trail: right of the gate, the Santa Fe Valley segment runs 2.9 miles over seven bridges and up a set of switchbacks; left of it, the Del Dios Gorge segment runs 2.27 miles, with the footbridge over the gorge about a mile in. Walk it early, then come back into the village for lunch.
