It's Raw Poke Shop is the best restaurant in Ocean Beach, and it does not own a
single table. You order at a counter on Newport Avenue, you carry the bag out,
and then you go find somewhere to eat it — which, in this neighborhood, is not
a hardship.
Most of the good eating here works about like that. A pastry case, a fish case,
a shawarma counter where somebody will steer you, and a few real dining rooms
for the days that call for sitting down. Newport Avenue alone covers poke,
Cuban pastelitos, Iraqi shawarma and one extremely large burger inside a few
blocks.
Parking is the tax you pay for all of it. Go early, walk more than you drive,
and order whatever the counter is known for instead of the thing you always
get.
Use the Ocean Beach neighborhood guide for the
map, put It's Raw and Blue Water next to the citywide seafood
ranking, take Azucar into the best bakery
guide, or use the best burgers in San
Diego for the citywide version of that
argument.
